Meet the Future: Humanoid Robots and AI Agents Take the Spotlight

Technology leaders examined digital sovereignty, AI infrastructure and the importance of building African technological capabilities.

It was a packed first day at the Singularity Summit South Africa 2026 yesterday, with a full house of over 1,400 delegates at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Presented in collaboration with Old Mutual, event sponsors Google Cloud and Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), and metaverse partner UBU, this year’s Summit features over 40 speakers from around the world.

Following a welcome by Singularity South Africa Co-CEOs Mic Mann and Shayne Mann, and a video message from Singularity founder Peter Diamandis, David Roberts kicked off a fascinating day of talks that challenged much of what we think we know about AI, technology and the future. From the rise of AI-powered workforces and humanoid robots to Africa’s opportunities in the new digital economy, the speakers shared some remarkable developments, practical examples and important lessons for business leaders. Here are some of the key insights from the day.

Singularity South Africa Co-CEOs Mic Mann and Shayne Mann welcome delegates to the 2026 summit.

David Roberts | Global Expert in Disruption, Innovation & Leadership

Opening the keynote programme, David Roberts challenged business leaders to rethink how they approach disruption, arguing that companies often fail because they underestimate the scale and speed of change. We learned that most organisations prepare for the future by projecting what they already know, rather than imagining what could become possible.

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally different from previous technological revolutions because, rather than extending a single human capability, it has the potential to scale intelligence itself. Roberts drew an important distinction between AI-augmented businesses, which use technology to improve existing operations, and AI-native businesses, which are designed from the outset around the availability of increasingly inexpensive intelligence. His challenge to leaders was to stop asking how AI could improve their current businesses and start asking what they would build if intelligence were almost free.

Cathy Hackl | Global Technology Futurist and Innovation Expert

Cathy Hackl encouraged delegates to move beyond the familiar debate about whether AI will save or destroy humanity and instead consider the many possible futures we can choose to create. She introduced a fascinating range of emerging opportunities, from autonomous AI agents making purchasing decisions and robots operating in physical environments to quantum sensing, advanced materials, longevity technologies and the growing space economy.

We were exposed to a future in which computing moves beyond screens and becomes increasingly integrated into the physical world, while entirely new markets emerge around digital experiences and intelligent machines. For Africa, Hackl highlighted opportunities to participate in fields such as quantum sensing and communications, rather than simply following developments elsewhere. Her central message was that technology does not determine our future. The decisions we make about how to develop and apply it do.

Ziaad Suleman | Technology and Digital Infrastructure Leader, Cassava Technologies

Ziaad Suleman made a compelling case for Africa to take ownership of its AI future, highlighting the continent’s young population as a significant competitive advantage. Unlike previous industrial revolutions, where Africa often adopted technologies developed elsewhere, the AI revolution presents an opportunity to build alongside the rest of the world.

He explained the concept of an AI factory, where computing power, data and models work together to produce intelligence at industrial scale. Importantly, he argued that true digital sovereignty extends beyond where data is stored to include who controls the infrastructure, technology and economic value it creates.

With Africa currently accounting for less than 1% of global data centre capacity, despite representing approximately 20% of the world’s population, the investment opportunity is substantial. His message was clear: Africa must develop its own AI capabilities and infrastructure if it wants to benefit fully from the next wave of economic growth.

Maureen Costello | Vice President, UKI and SSA, Google Cloud

Maureen Costello explored the transition from AI as a tool we interact with to AI as a digital colleague capable of completing complex tasks independently. She described three stages in the evolution of workplace technology: software that requires human input, AI assistants that respond to prompts, and autonomous AI agents that can be given an outcome to achieve.

A live demonstration brought this to life, showing how an AI chief of staff could identify a delivery truck breakdown, communicate with the driver in isiZulu, assess the business implications and recommend a recovery plan for human approval.

Beyond the impressive technology, the strategic lesson was that businesses will achieve far greater value from AI when they redesign workflows rather than simply adding AI tools to existing processes. She also highlighted Africa’s opportunity to build AI-first systems without being constrained by outdated technology infrastructure.

Felix Cheung | Founder and CEO, Bairong Group

Felix Cheung offered a fascinating glimpse into what an AI-enabled workforce could look like, drawing on Bairong’s experience in deploying AI at scale in industries including banking, telecommunications and customer service. He explained how AI has progressed from analysing information and supporting decisions to autonomous agents capable of completing entire business processes.

At Bairong, approximately 200,000 AI agents already operate alongside around 1,000 human employees, with digital workers assigned responsibilities, performance measures and reporting structures.

The implications for business are significant, particularly as organisations begin to consider how human and digital employees will work together. Cheung stressed that successful AI adoption must begin with a genuine business problem, with the focus on completing work effectively rather than simply demonstrating impressive technology.

Dario Fanucchi | CTO, Isazi.ai

Dario Fanucchi demonstrated just how dramatically AI is compressing the time required to complete complex work. Through practical examples, he showed how tasks that previously demanded months of work from specialist teams can now be completed in days or even hours using multiple AI agents.

One example involved a major supply chain analysis that would traditionally have required several months but was completed in just 16 hours by two senior data scientists working with 20 AI agents. He also demonstrated how AI is accelerating software development and enabling teams to tackle problems that would previously have been prohibitively expensive or technically difficult.

His challenge was particularly relevant for business leaders: rather than asking which existing tasks AI can automate, we should be identifying ambitious opportunities that have only recently become achievable.

Barak Kaufman | Chief Strategy Officer, Wonderful.ai

Barak Kaufman addressed one of the biggest challenges facing businesses today: moving AI beyond experimentation and into meaningful, organisation-wide implementation. While many companies have introduced AI tools, relatively few have successfully deployed autonomous agents to manage complete business processes.

He identified fragmented technology decisions, incompatible systems and insufficient attention to change management as major barriers. Using the example of a business loan application, Kaufman showed how coordinated AI agents could reduce a process involving multiple departments and lengthy manual procedures to just a few hours, while retaining human oversight of important decisions.

His advice was practical: select one complete workflow, begin with a small proportion of transactions, establish what works and then expand. Successful AI transformation, he argued, requires executive leadership and a coordinated approach rather than isolated technology projects.

Rajesh Pasungili and Shayne Mann | Robotics and Technology Innovation

A live demonstration of humanoid robots Maximus and Marcy brought the physical possibilities of AI into focus. Delegates saw how advances in robotics are enabling machines to balance, move and respond to their environments with increasing sophistication, opening up future applications in manufacturing, healthcare and homes. The presentation also turned attention to Africa’s young population and the importance of equipping children with the skills to build and work alongside these technologies.

Resolute Education’s robotics initiative demonstrated how coding robots are already introducing South African schoolchildren to programming, problem-solving and engineering principles. Delegates also learned that Cape Town will host the World Robot Olympiad International Final in 2028, bringing a major global platform for young robotics innovators to Africa for the first time.

Raoul Pal | Global Macro Investor and Co-Founder of Real Vision

Raoul Pal shared a thought-provoking perspective on the economic implications of exponential technological growth. He argued that we are entering an era in which AI, robotics, renewable energy, biotechnology and space technologies are advancing simultaneously, reinforcing one another and accelerating economic change. As the cost of computing and intelligence falls, entirely new business models and markets will become possible.

Pal explored how autonomous AI agents could increasingly participate in economic activity as producers, consumers and decision-makers, with blockchain, tokenisation and digital currencies potentially providing the infrastructure for machine-to-machine transactions.

For Africa, he identified important advantages in our youthful population, abundant solar resources and ability to adopt new technologies without the constraints of legacy systems. He also offered an interesting perspective on the future value of human experiences, suggesting that as digital intelligence becomes increasingly abundant, authentic human interaction could become an even more valuable economic asset.

Kyle Hermans | CEO, Oxford Leadership and CEO, Be Courageous Research

Kyle Hermans shifted the focus from technology to the human courage required to navigate constant change. He argued that the pace and complexity of disruption will continue to increase, making it essential for leaders to develop the confidence to challenge established ways of thinking.

Through his five principles of courage, he encouraged delegates to work backwards from the future they want to create, build new systems rather than continually repair outdated ones, remain willing to learn and unlearn, innovate before change becomes unavoidable and create workplaces where people feel safe to contribute ideas.

A particularly valuable lesson was that leadership must balance the need to deliver results today with the responsibility to prepare organisations for a very different tomorrow. Courage, he suggested, is not simply a personal quality but a practical leadership capability that can unlock innovation throughout an organisation.

Celiwe Ross | Group Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Officer, Old Mutual

Celiwe Ross brought the AI conversation firmly into the realities of South African business, sharing practical lessons from Old Mutual’s experience. She explained that while AI can help employees work faster, genuine transformation only happens when organisations rethink how work is done.

Through examples involving fraud detection and an internal employee support agent, she demonstrated why involving employees in the design of AI solutions is essential to building trust and encouraging adoption. In the fraud detection example, investigators helped shape the technology using their own experience, enabling AI to identify emerging patterns while leaving important decisions in human hands.

Ross emphasised that leaders must develop their own understanding of AI, equip employees with relevant skills and recognise that human judgement, empathy and trust will become increasingly important as technology takes on more routine work.

Christina Gerakiteys | CEO, UtopiaX and Founder, IdeaSparx

Christina Gerakiteys delivered a powerful reminder that innovation depends as much on our willingness to fail as it does on our ability to succeed. Through stories from business, aviation and her own family, she explored how the fear of making mistakes can prevent individuals and organisations from experimenting with new ideas.

She highlighted examples of companies that have deliberately created environments where mistakes are openly discussed and lessons shared, as well as businesses that discovered major opportunities through initiatives that initially appeared unsuccessful. One example was Slack, which emerged from the failure of an online gaming venture.

Her message to leaders was that organisations need to rethink how they respond to failure, creating psychologically safe environments where people are encouraged to test ideas, learn and adapt. In a world of rapidly advancing AI, the human ability to experiment, make unexpected connections and discover opportunities through mistakes remains a significant advantage.

Benjamin Rosman | AI Researcher and Founder of the MIND Institute at Wits University

Professor Benjamin Rosman shared an inspiring perspective on intelligence, adaptability and the importance of building Africa’s own AI research capabilities. Drawing on his personal experience of living with cerebral palsy, he explained how the brain’s ability to adapt to physical constraints shaped his understanding of intelligence as something far broader than simply knowing the correct answers.

He also reflected on the development of the Deep Learning Indaba, which has grown from an initiative to connect African AI researchers into a major continental network supporting research, collaboration and skills development.

Through the MIND Institute at Wits University, Rosman is working to strengthen Africa’s ability to contribute to the development of AI rather than simply consume technologies created elsewhere. His broader message was that the future will reward adaptability, collaboration and the ability to find new solutions to unfamiliar challenges.

Bionic technology advocate Tilly Lockey discusses prosthetic technology and its potential at Singularity South Africa Summit 2026.

Tilly Lockey | Bionic Technology Advocate and Open Bionics Ambassador

Tilly Lockey returned to the Singularity South Africa stage seven years after her first appearance, sharing an extraordinary account of how advances in prosthetic technology have transformed her life. Having lost both hands to meningococcal septicaemia as a young child, she described the progression from basic prosthetic devices to sophisticated bionic arms that she helped design and test with Open Bionics.

Her story demonstrated the importance of involving the people who will use technology in its development, rather than assuming that engineers and designers already know what they need. She also explored how AI could make future prosthetics increasingly intuitive, potentially anticipating intended movements and responding more naturally to users.

Lockey reminded delegates that while much of the global AI conversation focuses on risks, technology is already restoring independence, mobility and opportunity to people around the world. She concluded by introducing South African engineering student and inventor Fana Shabane, whose development of a robotic assistant for his grandmother demonstrated how personal challenges can inspire practical innovation.
