KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) has secured a record $47.4 million in refunds and compensation for consumers during the first six months of the 2026/2027 financial year, representing a 161.7 per cent increase over the corresponding period last year.
Between April and September 2026, the commission said it recovered $47,408,226.76 on behalf of aggrieved consumers, compared with $18,113,900.33 during the same period in 2025.
The CAC noted that it handled 760 consumer complaints over the six-month period and responded to an additional 170 requests for advice, providing guidance to consumers navigating challenges in the marketplace.
According to the commission, the largest proportion of complaints fell under the category of ‘other services’, which accounted for 33.33 per cent of all complaints, up from 23.11 per cent during the corresponding period last year.
Complaints relating to electrical equipment and appliances accounted for 21.08 per cent, while motor vehicles and parts represented 9.64 per cent.
Despite accounting for a smaller share of complaints, the motor vehicles and parts category attracted the highest value of refunds and compensation, totalling $33.66 million.
This was followed by the ‘other services’ category, which accounted for approximately $6.98 million in recoveries, and hardware items, which generated $3.31 million in refunds and compensation.
Meanwhile, CAC Chief Executive Officer Dolsie Allen has raised concerns about emerging consumer challenges linked to the rapid growth of online shopping and digital commerce.
Allen noted that the commission had observed a significant increase in complaints involving courier services and the e-commerce sector, reflecting changing consumer behaviour and growing challenges within the marketplace.
“Driven by the rapid expansion of digital trade, the CAC has noted a significant increase in complaints tied to courier services and the e-commerce sector. The commission is therefore calling for heightened vigilance from both service providers and consumers navigating the growing e-commerce landscape,” she said.
