TZ shines in Africa’s governance rankings

TANZANIA: TANZANIA has emerged fifth in Africa in the 2026 Chandler Good Government Index (CGGI), recording the biggest improvement in overall government performance among 23 African countries assessed since 2021.

According to the Chandler Institute of Governance (CIG), Tanzania has registered significant improvements in robust laws and policies and strong institutions, reflecting progress in strengthening government effectiveness.

The country has also made notable progress in innovation under the leadership and foresight pillar, climbing 40 places in the global rankings from 83rd to 43rd.

In Africa, Tanzania ranks behind Mauritius, Rwanda, Botswana and Morocco, which occupy the top four positions, while South Africa comes sixth. Tanzania is ranked 80th globally.

The 2026 index covers 133 countries, representing 94 per cent of the world’s population, up from 120 countries assessed in 2025.

CIG Director of Knowledge, Mr Dinesh Naidu, said improvements in laws, policies and institutions demonstrate efforts to strengthen the foundations of transparent and effective governance.

He said the next step is to ensure that the gains translate into improvements in other areas of government performance.

Across Africa, average scores have improved in six of the seven pillars assessed over the past year, reflecting progress in government performance across the continent.

CGGI is an annual assessment designed to measure the capabilities and effectiveness of governments in delivering public services, implementing policies and responding to national development challenges.

It provides a framework for understanding how governments perform across different areas of governance, enabling countries to assess their strengths and identify opportunities for further improvement.

The index uses 35 indicators grouped into seven pillars to assess government capabilities and effectiveness, providing a broad picture of how public institutions function and deliver results.

These pillars cover leadership and foresight, robust laws and policies, strong institutions, financial stewardship, attractive marketplace, global influence and reputation, and helping people rise.

Through these indicators, the index examines key aspects of governance, including policy development, institutional capacity, management of public resources and the ability of governments to create conditions that support economic and social development.

The assessment also enables countries to compare their performance with that of other nations, track progress over time and draw lessons from different governance approaches.
