President Ruto Mourns 23 People Who Died Along Mombasa Road Today
President William Ruto has mourned 23 people who died in a horrific road accident in Makueni County, directing authorities to conduct thorough inspections of public service vehicles to prevent further tragedies.
The accident occurred at around 7am on Sunday, October 25, near Kanga, close to Mtito Andei along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.A bus belonging to The Power of the Word Church International collided head-on with an oncoming lorry.
The bus was carrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony and travelling towards Mombasa when the deadly collision occurred.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Ruto expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims, describing the incident as a painful loss for the country. He also wished those injured a speedy recovery.
The president urged motorists, particularly public service vehicle drivers, to exercise caution and follow traffic regulations to protect passengers and other road users.
He further instructed the relevant authorities to inspect public transport vehicles to ensure they meet the required safety standards.
Initial reports indicated that 20 people had died at the scene before the death toll increased to 23, according to figures cited by the president.
Sixteen injured passengers were taken to Makindu Sub County Hospital and Mtito Andei Hospital for treatment. The identities of the deceased and further details about the condition of the injured had not been officially confirmed in the available reports.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) launched investigations to establish the cause of the accident.
Preliminary findings suggested that improper overtaking might have contributed to the collision. Investigators are examining the events leading up to the crash to determine how the two vehicles collided.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about road safety along the busy Nairobi Mombasa Highway, which carries heavy passenger and commercial traffic.
It comes weeks after another fatal accident at Salama on October 3, 2026, which claimed the lives of 17 pilgrims from St. Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church, Mikindani Parish, who were travelling to the National Shrine in Subukia.
Authorities are continuing investigations as Ruto’s directive places fresh focus on vehicle inspections and compliance with road safety regulations.
