Just Hours After Presiding Over Mashujaa Day Celebrations, Ruto Receives This Unexpected News

Nairobi witnessed fresh protests on Tuesday, October 20, as activists took to the streets to oppose the latest increase in fuel prices and demand action from the government.

The demonstrators gathered in the Central Business District (CBD), using empty jerrycans, vuvuzelas and printed T-shirts to draw attention to the rising cost of fuel.

Some protesters wore shirts bearing messages rejecting high fuel prices as they marched through the city centre, calling on the government to listen to their concerns.

One activist said the group had gathered to express the frustrations of Kenyans struggling with the rising cost of living.

The protest came during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, with activists using the occasion to demand that the government address the financial pressure facing ordinary citizens.

The demonstrations followed the latest fuel price review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), which announced higher pump prices for the October-November period.

Under the new rates, Super Petrol increased by KSh12.93 per litre to KSh226.96 in Nairobi. Diesel rose by KSh9.90 to KSh227.76, while kerosene increased by KSh28.49 to KSh219.87 per litre.

The price changes took effect on October 15 and are expected to affect transport operators, businesses and households that depend on petroleum products.

Activists have called for a review of taxes and levies on fuel, suspension of VAT on petroleum products and an independent audit of the energy sector. They also want government agencies to explain how fuel prices are calculated.

The protests came after civil rights groups issued demands to the government over the rising cost of living.

Meanwhile, reports emerged that Citizen TV journalist Odee Francis was arrested while covering the demonstrations along Kimathi Street. The incident raised further attention around the events unfolding in Nairobi’s CBD.

The activists are calling for practical measures to reduce the burden on Kenyans as the debate over fuel prices continues.

Do you think the government should reduce fuel taxes to ease the cost of living?
