Nerds mourn grandfather of Nerddom

Patrick Stewart has passed away at the age of 86 from complications related to Alzheimer’s and Lewy Body Dementia.

You can’t call his passing tragic because he lived a long and fruitful life. That said, nerds the world over cannot help but mourn because Stewart defined nerd culture for multiple generations, partly because he carried the energy of an outsider, if that makes sense.

Blame it on that bald head, deep voice, English accent, and stern expression. Did I mention his Shakespearean background? Stewart was reciting Shakespeare from memory as a teenager.

He spent fifteen years honing his craft in the theatre. If you watched *Star Trek: The Next Generation *and thought Picard had a special quality no other cast member could replicate, Stewart was using his Shakespearean training to elevate the role.

The actor mentioned in interviews that the early years of Star Trek tested his patience because his castmates were a relaxed, laid-back, fun-loving bunch, and Stewart would routinely lecture them on the importance of bringing a more serious attitude to their work. That gravitas is what set him apart.

Stewart felt like you were a child playing with your toys in the bedroom, then your serious, mature father walked in. But rather than throwing your toys away and shoving a book into your hands, he sat down, and joined you in playing with them. People are often surprised to learn that he only joined Star Trek: The Next Generation at 47.

Ian McKellen (Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings) warned him against playing the part, but Stewart had no choice. He was a struggling actor who needed the money. He thought the show’s producers would reject him because of his hair, which he lost at 19.

He even wore a wig during early screen tests. But Gene Roddenberry (Star Trek founder) told him to ditch it. Stewart never told Roddenberry what he thought of The Next Generation: that it had no future and he was more than happy to play Picard for a few episodes before returning home.

To his surprise, the show lasted 176 episodes, making Stewart a wealthy man. In the aftermath, Stewart struggled to find work in Hollywood because his Star Trek character was too iconic.

Every casting director saw him as Picard, and they expected audiences to fall into a similar pit. So, he went back to his first love (theater) until Hollywood came calling and asked him to play Charles Xavier in X-Men, unaware that he would also turn that character into another dominant figure in nerd culture.

In recent years, Stewart has settled into his role as the ‘Grandfather of Nerddom.’ Many celebrities in his position become bitter about being remembered for one (or two) roles in nerd culture while the rest of their work goes largely unnoticed. But not Stewart.

He grew to appreciate the passion and fervor he ignited in avid Star Trek and comic book fans. In the months before *Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness *debuted, he was seemingly overwhelmed by the idea that audiences had identified him from a tiny snippet of his voice in the trailer at a time when the studio wanted to keep his cameo a secret.

He radiated a warm, inviting aura that made one think, “You know what? If Patrick Stewart thinks X-Men and Star Trek are cool, why am I hiding my obsession with those franchises?” 2026 has claimed the lives of many celebrities, but Sir Patrick Stewart mattered to nerd culture (I suppose, Dolly Parton also deserves a mention because she was even more iconic).

I will end with a quote from Star Trek: The Next Generation, spoken by Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard: “Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives. I rather believe that time is a companion that goes with us on the journey and reminds us to cherish each moment, because it will never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we have lived.” Patrick Stewart lived well.
