The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has taken a swipe at Nigerians who fail to acknowledge the achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, suggesting that they may need eyeglasses to see the changes she says are taking place across the country.
Mrs Tinubu made the remark on Saturday while inaugurating the Abuja headquarters of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, a grassroots mobilisation group working to build support for the President ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the First Lady, Nigeria is making progress under her husband’s administration, although some citizens have apparently failed to recognise the developments.
“So things are happening in Nigeria, except, you know, those who don’t see; maybe we’ll give them some, you know, Bola Tinubu eyeglasses. We are doing that, JigiBola,” she said.
She was referring to the Jigi-Bola eye-care initiative introduced by her husband in 2001 during his tenure as governor of Lagos State. The programme provided eye screenings, eyeglasses and surgical interventions for people with eye problems. It was relaunched by the Lagos State Government in 2021.
Citing developments in the aviation sector, the First Lady said improvements at Nigerian airports were among the changes she had observed under the current administration.
“I want to get to the airport. I want to travel, you know, so quickly. And you can see our airports too are changing,” she added.
Mrs Tinubu also expressed optimism that Nigeria would become a more comfortable country for her to live in after her husband’s tenure, saying she hoped to enjoy the country when she leaves the Presidential Villa in 2031.
“I want to leave Aso Rock, in 2031, by the grace of God, and enter a Nigeria that me as a 70-something-year-old woman will enjoy,” she said.
The First Lady’s remarks come amid growing political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, with pro-Tinubu groups stepping up efforts to consolidate support for the President’s anticipated re-election campaign.
The PBAT Door-to-Door Movement is one of the groups seeking to mobilise grassroots support for the President as political activities gather momentum ahead of the polls.
However, the administration’s performance remains a subject of intense public debate, particularly over the rising cost of living, economic reforms and their impact on ordinary Nigerians.
While the Federal Government has pointed to infrastructure development and policy changes as evidence of progress, many citizens continue to grapple with high food prices, transportation costs and other household expenses..
