British Teenagers Arrested in Spain Over Alleged Armed Plot to Rob Drug Gang of Narcotics

Three British teenagers have been arrested on Spain’s Costa del Sol after police uncovered a collection of firearms, machetes and disguises in an investigation into suspected drug-related criminal activity.

The suspects, two aged 17 and one aged 18, were detained on September 21, according to Spanish newspaper ABC. Investigators believe the group may have been preparing to launch a violent raid to steal drugs from rival criminals.

The seized items included five semiautomatic pistols, machetes, baseball bats, clown masks and masks designed to resemble human faces. The discovery of the weapons raised suspicions that the teenagers were preparing for a potentially violent confrontation.

Investigation Began With a Stolen Car in Portugal

The investigation reportedly began in July after a vehicle was reported stolen in Portugal. Police subsequently traced the car to the Benabola car park in Puerto Banús, Marbella, an area known for its luxury marina and high-end properties.

Officers discovered that the vehicle was displaying cloned Swedish number plates. They also noticed shopping and travel bags inside containing weapons and disguises, prompting investigators to place the car under surveillance.

According to information reported by ABC, the suspects wore latex gloves when handling the vehicle and covered their heads. Investigators also believed the car was being used to store drugs.

Police Suspected Plans for a Violent Drug Raid

Authorities reportedly believe the teenagers intended to use the weapons to attack other criminals and steal their drug supplies. The number and variety of items recovered contributed to suspicions that the group was preparing for an organised robbery.

The suspects, who included two brothers, were already known to police. Their records reportedly included incidents involving fights and assaults.

One of the teenagers’ fathers is also believed to have had a criminal record in the United Kingdom linked to organised crime before settling in the Costa del Sol area with his family. Two of the suspects grew up in the region.

Police have not publicly established every detail of the alleged plan, and the suspicions remain allegations rather than proven offences.

Drugs, Cash and Weapons Recovered in House Raids

As the investigation progressed, officers searched two properties and uncovered additional suspected narcotics.

The substances seized included 827 grams of ketamine, 670 grams of a drug described by police as tusi, and 52 grams of MDMA. Investigators also recovered 425 ecstasy tablets.

Police confiscated cash in several currencies, including €21,975, £410 and $100.

The teenagers were reportedly observed selling drugs and frequently visiting cannabis clubs during the investigation. Authorities are also investigating suspicions that Swedish criminal gangs may have supplied the weapons.

Different Detention Arrangements for the Suspects

Following their arrests, the 18-year-old suspect was remanded in custody, while the two 17-year-olds were placed in a juvenile detention centre.

The case highlights concerns about the involvement of young people in suspected organised criminal activity along Spain’s southern coast, a region that has faced persistent challenges from drug-trafficking networks.

Costa del Sol Continues to Face Drug-Smuggling Challenges

The Costa del Sol’s popularity with tourists has not prevented criminal groups from exploiting parts of the coastline for drug trafficking. Authorities have struggled to stop smugglers who use sophisticated equipment and fast boats to transport illegal shipments.

According to reporting on the region’s trafficking networks, gangs use drones, radar systems and thermal cameras to reduce the risk of detection. Powerful speedboats can also outrun many police vessels, making interceptions difficult.

Juan Luján, head of the Spanish National Police’s organised crime unit in the Costa del Sol region, told The Wall Street Journal that authorities could not allow large numbers of smuggling boats to operate openly from ports and bays or unload drugs close to families enjoying the beaches.

Despite law enforcement efforts, Luján acknowledged that security forces had effectively lost control of some areas of coastal waters.

The arrests come against this wider backdrop of concern over drug-smuggling operations along one of Spain’s best-known tourist coastlines, where criminal activity can take place close to busy beaches and holiday destinations.
