Moroccan journalists vote to elect new National Press Council

Moroccan journalists voted Tuesday to elect their representatives to a new National Press Council, in the first nationwide ballot held under the body’s reorganized legal framework.

Voting took place at 12 polling stations across Morocco’s regions, with journalists allowed to select up to seven candidates.

The election is being held under Law 09.26 on the reorganization of the National Press Council and implementing rules issued by the temporary committee that has been overseeing the body and preparing the vote.

The final candidate list includes 39 journalists and media professionals from 41 applications submitted.

At the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra polling station, hosted by the Higher Institute of Information and Communication in Rabat, voting proceeded in an orderly manner with steady turnout.

The elected representatives will serve five-year terms, renewable once.

The vote comes as the profession faces rapid changes linked to digital media and artificial intelligence, adding pressure on the next council to address regulation, professional standards and working conditions.
