Africa Magic unveils 5 new originals for October

Africa Magic has unveiled five new original productions for October, offering viewers a mix of relationship drama, psychological thriller and stories rooted in Nigerian culture and tradition.

The new titles include Better Half, The Ten, Sirrin Amarya, Afobaje and Onu Ahia Nwanyi, spanning Africa Magic’s English-language, Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo channels.

Better Half, which premiered on Monday, October 5, at 8:30pm on Africa Magic Showcase, follows a relationship influencer who lands a reality television show to prove her formula for love works.

However, her plans are thrown into disarray when secrets surrounding her fiancé’s family begin to emerge.

Executive produced by Rogba Arimoro, the series features Treasure Enagbare, Nnamdi Agbo, Demi Banwo and Tolu Asanu.

Another major addition to the October slate is The Ten, a psychological thriller created by actress and filmmaker Lota Chukwu.

The series follows 10 survivors of a past kidnapping who reunite for a vigil led by a guilt-ridden head pastor, Matthew, played by Patrick Dibuah.

Their reunion takes a deadly turn when one of them is murdered. With a local festival leaving the group trapped inside the church, they are forced to confront a new threat as they realise that the killer is among them.

The Ten premieres on Thursday, October 8, at 8:30pm on Africa Magic Showcase.

Speaking on the new lineup, Executive Head, Content and Channels, West Africa, MultiChoice Nigeria, Atinuke Ngozi Babatunde, said the October slate was designed to offer audiences a variety of stories, genres and perspectives.

“October gives audiences a lot to look forward to, with new series that span different genres, languages and perspectives,” she said.

Babatunde said the new productions reflected Africa Magic’s commitment to creating opportunities for local talent while giving viewers stories that resonate with them.

The lineup also features three new indigenous-language productions, beginning with Sirrin Amarya, which means “The Bride’s Secret”, on Africa Magic Hausa.

The series premieres Saturday, October 10, at 8pm on DStv channel 156. It combines psychological suspense, romance and family drama, telling the story of a young bride who disappears shortly before her wedding to one of Northern Nigeria’s influential businessmen.

Her disappearance sparks a crisis between the two families, while the businessman’s eldest son begins an investigation that exposes a decade-old conspiracy involving betrayal, corruption, forbidden love and revenge.

The series is executive produced and directed by Chidozie Christian Ahaiwe and stars Norah Ego as Zainab, the missing bride, alongside Aysha Usman Adam.

On Africa Magic Yoruba, Afobaje explores a 29-year-old betrayal in the fictional Ekinrinade Confederation.

The drama follows kingmakers who once overthrew the old monarchy and betrayed their spiritual guardian, Ajangbadi. His return with the last royal heir forces Crown Prince Aderounmu to investigate a series of killings and uncover dark secrets about his lineage.

The prince must ultimately choose between vengeance and wisdom in an effort to save his kingdom.

Afobaje airs Saturdays and Sundays at 7pm on DStv channel 157 and features veterans including Antar Laniyan, Aina Gold, Murphy Ray, Mr Paragaon and Abija.

Meanwhile, Onu Ahia Nwanyi, directed by Smart Ifeanyi Chukwu Abugu, premieres on Africa Magic Igbo at 7:30pm.

The story centres on Nkem, a young woman who enters a traditional bride contest as a way out of a difficult family situation. However, she soon falls for the very man she is competing to marry.

As secrets and hidden ambitions emerge, the contest begins to threaten the interests and future of several powerful families.

The new productions add to Africa Magic’s long-running effort to showcase Nigerian stories, languages, culture and talent to audiences in Nigeria and across the continent.

The titles will also be available on DStv Stream.
