Three teachers are in police custody in Milange District, Zambézia province, suspected of diverting food supplies intended for school meals under the Partnering for Sustainable Education Outcomes (PARES) programme.
The information was confirmed by the director of the Milange District Education, Youth and Technology Service (SDEJT), Aníbal Fombe, who said the suspects are employees of Nalicule Primary School: the head teacher, the deputy head teacher for academic affairs and a female teacher who served as the storekeeper.
During an inspection operation, various food supplies were recovered, some of which were found at the suspects’ homes, totalling more than 100 kilogrammes of assorted food products, as well as dozens of litres of cooking oil.
According to the SDEJT, in addition to the criminal proceedings under way under the responsibility of the competent authorities, disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against the employees concerned to establish any administrative responsibility arising from the alleged offences.
The authorities are continuing their investigations to clarify the circumstances in which the food supplies were removed from the school and determine the possible individual responsibility of those involved.
