Dr. Odunayo Ani, President of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria, has called for the effective implementation of the Port Community System (PCS) and National Single Window (NSW) to improve efficiency, reduce cargo delays and promote environmentally sustainable maritime operations in Nigeria.
Ani made the call while delivering her goodwill message at the fifth annual lecture and awards ceremony organised by Primetime Reporters in Lagos.
The event, themed “Smarter Gateways, Greener Logistics: Leveraging Port Community System and National Single Window for Zero-Emission Trade,” brought together policymakers, regulators, industry leaders and other stakeholders to discuss the future of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
According to her, Nigeria must develop more connected, efficient and responsive ports to compete effectively in global trade.
She noted that the effective implementation of the PCS and NSW would improve coordination among industry stakeholders, simplify procedures, strengthen information sharing and reduce the delays and costs associated with cargo movement.
Ani added that these improvements would support the broader objective of building a more sustainable and environmentally responsible maritime industry.
She commended Primetime Reporters for sustaining a platform that promotes informed discussions on critical industry issues while recognising individuals whose contributions continue to advance the sector.
“A thriving maritime sector requires both constructive scrutiny and the encouragement of those who are making a positive difference,” she said.
The WISTA Nigeria president also expressed gratitude to the organisers for recognising her with the 2026 Maritime Woman of the Year Award, describing the honour as a source of joy and encouragement.
She acknowledged the contributions of those who had supported and inspired her throughout her career, while dedicating the recognition to women who continue to break barriers, contribute their expertise and create opportunities for others in the maritime industry.
According to her, the award would further encourage her to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the sector.
Ani congratulated fellow award recipients and expressed hope that the annual lecture would generate practical ideas for advancing a smarter, greener and more competitive Nigerian maritime industry.
In her remarks, she also commended the men supporting women in the maritime sector, noting that their encouragement and cooperation were important to women’s progress and achievements.
She further applauded the organisers for creating an event that brought together more women and women-focused groups, describing the development as a positive step towards greater inclusion in the industry.
The fifth annual lecture and awards ceremony recognised individuals and organisations whose contributions have supported the development of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
