Laryea Kingston outlines criteria for Black Stars player selection

Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston says he would place a strong emphasis on the level of competition and regular playing time when selecting players for the Black Stars.Kingston, who has expressed his willingness to take charge of the senior national team if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) comes calling, outlined his criteria in an interview with 3 Sports. He said players would first have to demonstrate that they compete at a sufficiently high level, with those outside the top leagues required to show exceptional quality to earn selection.First of all, which level are you playing in? Your team and the level of league that you are playing, competition that you are playing in, Kingston said. Its very important. First, a senior national team player should be playing, at least our target should be like top 10 football countries, top 10 leagues, let me say, top 10 leagues. Unless if you are outside top 10 leagues, you must be extraordinary.Kingston also wants regular playing time to be a key consideration, stressing that being included in a club's squad should not be enough. So we focus on that. Then two, are the players regular, playing actively, not making the squad, but getting minutes? One, starting, getting minutes, we can work out and you look at the form of the players, he added.Kingston has developed his coaching profile since retiring and has indicated his interest in the vacant Black Stars job.
