<div class="text-long"><p>CAPE TOWN - Parliament’s Impeachment Committee has voted to oppose two legal challenges relating to its decision to rescind the nomination of Advocate Griffiths Madonsela as evidence leader.</p><p>The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has approached the courts, seeking to have the committee’s decision overturned.</p><p>The African Legal Professionals Association has also launched a legal challenge, questioning decisions and actions taken in the handling of the Madonsela matter.</p><p>The committee voted against both applications.</p><blockquote><p><span><strong>LIVESTREAM | </strong></span><a href="https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories/livestream-impeachment-committee-meets-choose-new-evidence-leader"><span><strong>Impeachment committee meets to choose new evidence leader</strong></span></a></p></blockquote><p>Nineteen MPs voted in favour of opposing the legal challenges, while nine voted against the motion.</p><p>Impeachment Committee chairperson Makashule Gana confirmed the outcome.</p><p>“In favour of opposing, it’s 19, and in favour of abiding, it’s 9. So, 19 members have voted for opposing the two applications and nine members have voted against that.”</p><p>Gana said the majority decision gives the committee the legal mandate to oppose both applications.</p><p>He said the committee will resume the process of appointing an evidence leader once judgment has been delivered.</p><p><strong>Read more: </strong><a href="https://www.enca.com/news/impeachment-shouldnt-be-taken-lightly-expert"><strong>Impeachment shouldn’t be taken lightly – expert</strong></a></p></div>
