Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has said the US$30 million grant secured from China for the construction of a proposed University of Science and Technology in Damongo will not be enough to complete the project.
According to the Minister, establishing a fully functional university, including the provision of infrastructure and equipment, is expected to cost more than US$100 million.
Mr Iddrisu disclosed this during a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Cong Song, as the government explores additional funding and partnerships to move the project forward.
Ghana secured the US$30 million Chinese grant last year to support the initial construction of the proposed university. However, the Education Minister said additional resources would be required to bring the institution to full operation.
He therefore called for stronger collaboration and further financial assistance to ensure the project is completed to the required standard.
The proposed university is expected to specialise in Science and Technology, Robotics, Digital Sciences, Artificial Intelligence and other emerging areas.
Mr Iddrisu said the institution would help expand access to quality tertiary education while preparing young people with skills needed to compete in an increasingly technology-driven global economy.
He further disclosed that government is pursuing plans to establish universities in regions that currently do not have public universities.
According to him, the initiative is intended to address regional disparities in access to tertiary education and promote more balanced development across the country.
The Chinese Ambassador, Cong Song, commended the Education Minister for his commitment to transforming Ghana’s education sector.
He reaffirmed China’s willingness to deepen cooperation with Ghana in education and other areas of mutual interest.
The meeting was part of ongoing discussions to mobilise the additional resources and partnerships needed to advance the proposed Damongo university project.
