La residents protest Pleasure Beach demolition, ask Mahama to let traders return

AI summary
Residents of La have demonstrated against the demolition of structures at La Pleasure Beach, asking the government to step in and help the traders and workers who lost their livelihoods.
The protest, branded “Aaagbe Wɔ Demo”, was organised by the Ga-Dangme Progressive Front to voice the community’s anger over the exercise and what it has done to people who earn a living at the beach.
It comes a day after the Coalition of La Associations (COLA) gave the government and relevant authorities seven days to respond to demands for compensation for businesses and traders affected by the demolition exercises at Laboma Beach Resort and La Pleasure Beach.
Addressing the crowd, the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Titus Glover, called on President John Dramani Mahama to let the affected traders go back to the site. He asked the President to protect the rights of the Ga-Dangme people and to deal with the economic hardship the demolition has caused.
“We, the youth of the Ga-Dangme people, are saying that enough is enough. So we want to register our plea with the President to intervene and get the traders back to the place,” he said.
National Security operatives carried out the demolition on Friday, October 2, 2026, after a request from Labadi Beach Hotel, which is owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
Some of the affected traders and workers say the exercise has disrupted their businesses and cut off their income. They are asking the government and the relevant authorities to let them return and resume work.
