Eberechi Eze takes just 15 minutes to shut down Steven Gerrard with perfect response
Eberechi Eze responded to Steven Gerrard’s questions about his mentality by scoring for Arsenal against Bayern Munich just 15 minutes after coming off the bench in their 2-2 Champions League draw on Wednesday.
According to a report by Football London on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, the England international was introduced early in the first half after Bukayo Saka suffered an injury at the Allianz Arena.
Eze had initially been named among the substitutes by Mikel Arteta, with Saka and Noni Madueke starting on the wings and Martin Odegaard operating through the middle.
However, Saka’s apparent thigh problem forced Arteta into an early change, presenting Eze with an opportunity to make an impression against one of Europe’s leading sides.
Gerrard, working as a pundit for TNT Sports, suggested the situation would provide an important test for the Arsenal attacker, who has had limited opportunities in the Premier League this season.
“It’s a good test for Eze, we’ll see what type of mentality and character he is. I’m sure he would have been disappointed coming off but the best players use that as fuel,” the former Liverpool captain said.
Eze needed little time to provide his answer on the pitch, opening the scoring for Arsenal after Odegaard delivered a perfectly weighted pass behind Bayern’s defence.
The 28-year-old timed his run well before controlling the ball and finishing past Manuel Neuer with his left foot, giving the visitors the breakthrough after a closely contested opening period.
The goal was another encouraging moment for Eze, who had also scored in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Lille in the Champions League earlier in October.
Despite his European contributions, the attacking midfielder has struggled for regular playing time in the Premier League, accumulating just 130 minutes in the competition this season.
His performance against Bayern offered Arteta another reminder of the attacking quality available to him, particularly as Arsenal continue to compete on multiple fronts.
Bayern responded through Alphonso Davies, who equalised around 10 minutes after Eze’s opener. Harry Kane subsequently converted a penalty to put the German side ahead before Declan Rice struck in the 82nd minute to secure a draw for Arsenal.
The result leaves Arsenal with another competitive European performance, while Eze’s goal strengthens his case for greater involvement as the season progresses.
