Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has suspended its Chief Executive Officer, Yeremia Chihana, with immediate effect over alleged misconduct.
According to a memorandum circulated to all members of staff and seen by Malawi24, the suspension follows a resolution by the BWB Board and is being effected pursuant to Clause 3(d) of Chihana’s contract of employment.
The memorandum states that the suspension will remain in place pending an inquiry into the allegations.
During the suspension, Chihana will not be allowed to visit any BWB premises, sites or offices unless he is expressly invited in writing by the Board Chairperson or a designated representative.
He has also been directed not to communicate, either directly or indirectly, with BWB clients, suppliers or members of staff.
According to the memorandum, any communication involving Chihana and the water utility must instead be channelled through the Board Chairperson or a designated representative.
However, the memorandum does not disclose the specific allegations against Chihana.
It also does not indicate how long the inquiry is expected to take.
Malawi24 sought further information from BWB on the matter, but calls to the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Evelyn Khonje, went unanswered.
