Kean Grilled Over 116-Day Mental Health Absence as Democrat Bennett Turns Up Heat in Key Debate

Republican Representative Tom Kean Jr. faced an uncomfortable opening to his only televised debate against Democratic challenger Rebecca Bennett, as his 116-day absence from Congress became the first issue on the agenda.

Moderator David Wildstein pressed Kean on whether he had acted responsibly by waiting to publicly discuss the mental-health condition that kept him away from Capitol Hill earlier this year.

Kean defended his decision, describing the episode as a medical emergency that could not have been anticipated.

Kean defends decision to keep diagnosis private

Kean said his congressional office continued to communicate with constituents while he was receiving treatment, although he did not initially disclose that he had been diagnosed with depression.

“Nobody can plan a medical emergency and that was a medical emergency,” Kean said during the debate.

He argued that he eventually became transparent about his diagnosis and suggested that his priority had been getting the medical care he needed.

Bennett responded by acknowledging that Kean had received treatment, but quickly shifted the discussion toward his political record and relationship with President Donald Trump.

Absence had already triggered Republican concern

Kean’s extended absence had generated questions even within his own party.

Former New Jersey Attorney General John J. Farmer Jr. previously argued that, as a public official seeking another term, Kean should be as transparent as possible with voters.

Republican state Senator Jon Bramnick also described the absence as significant, noting that constituents had been asking where their congressman was.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, however, defended Kean’s right to deal with his health privately. Johnson said people were entitled to become ill and described Kean’s situation as not being a scandal.

Roxbury detention facility exposes a Republican divide

The debate then moved into immigration, where Kean attempted to establish some distance between himself and Trump.

A major point of contention was a proposed ICE detention facility in Roxbury, within Kean’s district.

Federal officials purchased a vacant 470,000-square-foot warehouse for approximately $129.3 million in February with plans to convert it into a detention facility.

New Jersey and Roxbury Township have challenged the proposal in federal court, seeking to stop the project through lawsuits and injunctions.

Asked directly about the facility, Kean said his priority was ensuring that an ICE facility was not established in Roxbury.

Bennett seizes on Kean’s declaration

Bennett immediately highlighted Kean’s answer as a significant development in the campaign.

She thanked him for finally making his position explicit, suggesting that voters had not previously received a clear answer from the Republican congressman.

The exchange allowed Bennett to argue that Kean’s willingness to oppose the detention centre demonstrated the importance of pressure from constituents, while Kean presented the issue as an example of his willingness to put local interests first.

Gateway tunnel becomes another point of disagreement

Kean also pointed to his opposition to certain Trump administration positions as evidence that he does not automatically follow the president.

One example was the Gateway rail tunnel project, a roughly $16 billion infrastructure programme designed to build a new rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River and rehabilitate the ageing tunnels connecting New Jersey and New York.

The project depends heavily on federal funding and is considered strategically important to the region’s transportation network.

Kean argued that his position demonstrated a willingness to challenge Trump when he believes New Jersey’s interests require it.

But Kean backs Trump on major policies

Despite highlighting areas of disagreement, Kean remained aligned with Trump on several major issues.

He defended his vote for Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”, arguing that its tax provisions would stimulate economic growth.

Bennett criticised the legislation, particularly its healthcare provisions and potential impact on the national debt.

Kean also defended Trump’s tariff policies, saying the president should have broad authority to use tariffs as negotiating leverage against other countries.

Iran and Israel expose another sharp divide

Foreign policy produced another major disagreement between the candidates.

Kean supported Trump’s military action against Iran, arguing that Tehran must not be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.

Bennett challenged that position, arguing that the conflict could leave the United States less safe and questioning whether there was a defined objective or exit strategy.

The candidates also diverged sharply over Israel. Kean offered strong support for Israel’s actions, while Bennett adopted a more critical position toward the Israeli government’s conduct.

Bennett enters debate with a polling advantage

The debate came as the race for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District showed signs of becoming increasingly competitive.

An Insider NJ/StimSight Research poll conducted from September 8 to 12 among 498 likely voters placed Bennett at 47%, compared with 42% for Kean.

The five-point advantage gives Bennett momentum heading into the final stretch, while Kean faces the dual challenge of defending his congressional record and explaining where he is prepared to break with a president whose agenda he has supported on several major issues.

Health, Trump and local issues dominate the contest

The debate ultimately underscored the difficult political balancing act facing Kean.

His extended medical absence remains a sensitive issue, while Bennett is attempting to connect his voting record to Trump’s national agenda.

At the same time, Kean is highlighting disagreements with the president on issues such as the Roxbury detention facility and Gateway rail funding to reinforce his claim that he can represent New Jersey independently.

With Bennett holding a five-point lead in the latest poll, those competing messages could prove decisive as voters prepare to choose between the two candidates.
