A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison with hard labour for raping a woman in full view of her boyfriend during a robbery in Blantyre.
The Blantyre Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court heard that Gift Gomiwa and an accomplice, who is still at large, attacked a 20-year-old woman and her boyfriend at Chitawira Bus Stage on 21 July 2025.
The two men were armed with panga knives and robbed the couple of two mobile phones worth K625,000 and cash.
They then took the victims to Naperi River, where Gomiwa raped the woman in the presence of her boyfriend.
Soche Police spokesperson Aaron Chilala confirmed the case to Capital FM.
Gomiwa was arrested two days later following police investigations.
He denied the charges, but the State produced four witnesses who proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Senior Resident Magistrate Asunta Maxwell sentenced Gomiwa to 18 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for rape and 13 years for robbery.
The sentences will run concurrently, meaning Gomiwa will effectively serve 18 years in prison.
Gomiwa comes from Gobodola Village, under Traditional Authority Mabuka in Mulanje District.
His accomplice remains at large.
