Kidnapping: Police rescue 8 victims in Benue forest

The Benue State Police Command has rescued eight of the remaining victims abducted by armed men along the Ankpenchi–Ogobia axis in Ohimini Local Government Area of the state.  Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus C.N. Nwadiogbu, disclosed this on Friday during an emergency press conference in Makurdi, saying the victims were rescued during an operation in Amla Forest at about 6.30am.  He said armed men had intercepted a commercial bus travelling along the route at about 11pm on September 13, 2026, abducting 13 passengers, four of whom were rescued shortly afterwards.  Nwadiogbu said tactical teams had remained in the forest since Monday, September 14, before storming the kidnappers’ camp based on credible intelligence and engaging them in a gun battle.  He, however, disclosed that one of the remaining nine victims died from gunshot injuries sustained when the kidnappers opened fire on the bus, adding that efforts were ongoing to recover the corpse and arrest fleeing members of the syndicate.  The commissioner also disclosed that six policemen had been lost in various operations in the state in recent months, including four during operations in Ayilamo and two others who were ambushed while moving to reinforce their colleagues.  He said crime had drastically reduced in the state recently but stressed that the Command would not relent in its efforts to reduce criminality to the barest minimum, particularly ahead of the electioneering period.  Nwadiogbu further disclosed that 17 suspects had been arrested in connection with the August 30 mob attack at Adagi along the Jato-Aka–Adikpo Road in Kwande Local Government Area, while a suspect arrested during a stop-and-search operation had a locally fabricated pistol recovered from him.
