Ballon d’Or 2026: Organisers keep winner to chest

Spread the word Organisers of the Ballon d’Or have maintained a strict confidentiality policy under which the winner is not informed of the outcome before the ceremony, allowing the recipient and the audience to discover the result during the live announcement.

The procedure is designed to preserve the suspense surrounding football’s most prestigious individual award and prevent information about the winner from leaking before the presentation. Blueprint reports

The development comes ahead of the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony, scheduled for Monday, October 26, at the London Palladium in England.

The award’s organisers introduced the stricter confidentiality arrangement in 2024 after years of speculation, premature disclosures and attempts by clubs, journalists and supporters to establish the winner before the official announcement.

Under the previous approach, the eventual recipient could be informed ahead of the ceremony, partly to facilitate interviews, photographs and other arrangements associated with the award. However, the advance notification sometimes made it easier for information about the result to circulate before the trophy was presented.

The revised procedure means the successful player is not supposed to receive advance confirmation of the outcome. Interviews and photographs intended for publication after the ceremony are also arranged differently to reduce the risk of an early disclosure.

The objective is to ensure that the winner’s reaction remains as spontaneous as possible, with the moment of triumph unfolding in front of the audience rather than being preceded by days of speculation based on behind-the-scenes arrangements.

Reports surrounding the 2026 ceremony have again drawn attention to the procedure, including claims that the previous practice of fitting the eventual winner with a microphone shortly before the announcement has been abandoned. The central change, however, is the policy of keeping the result confidential until the ceremony rather than informing the recipient in advance.

The Ballon d’Or has experienced several controversies involving premature reports about the winner and the final rankings.

In previous years, speculation often intensified in the days leading up to the ceremony, with journalists attempting to establish whether a particular player had been informed of the result or was preparing to attend the event.

The movements of players, their representatives and club officials sometimes became subjects of scrutiny, while reports about travel arrangements and possible absences fuelled speculation.

The problem became particularly visible in 2024, when Real Madrid and Vinícius Júnior were widely tipped to win the men’s award. The club ultimately boycotted the ceremony after learning that the Brazilian would not receive the trophy, with Manchester City midfielder Rodri announced as the winner.

The episode highlighted how expectations and unofficial information could dominate the conversation before the award was formally presented.

The organisers’ confidentiality measures are intended to prevent a repeat of such situations by limiting the number of people who know the outcome before the announcement.

The approach also means that being a leading contender does not guarantee advance knowledge of the result. Even players widely tipped to win must wait for the official announcement.

The 2026 ceremony will be held in London for the first time, as the award marks its 70th anniversary.

The Ballon d’Or was established by French magazine France Football in 1956. Its inaugural winner was England forward Stanley Matthews, whose achievement is being recognised through the choice of London as the host city for this year’s ceremony.

The event will feature awards for the best male and female players, alongside honours recognising young talents, goalkeepers, coaches, clubs and outstanding contributions to football and society.

The men’s shortlist includes several of the sport’s biggest names, among them Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, Ousmane Dembélé and Lionel Messi.

The final decision is based on voting by designated football journalists, who assess players according to their individual performances, team achievements and conduct in accordance with the award’s criteria.

Although the identity of the winner remains a closely guarded secret, the debate among supporters continues to centre on the players whose performances during the assessment period have placed them in contention.

The secrecy surrounding the winner has become an important part of the modern Ballon d’Or ceremony, helping to preserve the significance of the moment when the recipient is revealed.

For the players, the procedure means arriving at the event without official confirmation of whether they will leave with the trophy. For supporters, it offers the possibility of witnessing the winner’s genuine reaction alongside the rest of the audience.

The arrangement does not eliminate every possibility of a leak, as information can still circulate through unofficial channels. However, organisers have sought to reduce the opportunities for premature disclosure by limiting advance communication and changing the way interviews and promotional activities are handled.

With the 2026 ceremony approaching, attention will turn to whether the organisers can maintain the secrecy until the final announcement.

The winner may already be the subject of intense speculation, but under the current procedure, the official confirmation is reserved for the ceremony itself.
