Two cases against Shiranthi Rajapaksa, the wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and Namal Rajapaksa, the National Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and a Member of Parliament, are scheduled to be taken up before the courts today (13).
A case has been filed against Shiranthi Rajapaksa before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court over allegations of corruption and offences under the Public Property Act. The allegations relate to obtaining Rs. 10 million from the National Savings Bank through the Siriliya Saviya organisation, claiming that the money would be used to provide a CT scanner to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, but allegedly failing to provide the machine. She is accused of committing the offence of corruption through the criminal misappropriation of public funds.
On the 7th of this month, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) arrested her at her residence in the Kirulapone area in connection with the incident.
Following her arrest, she was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, which ordered that she be remanded until today.
However, she was admitted to the Cardiology Unit of the Colombo National Hospital yesterday afternoon.
Prisons Media Spokesperson and Prisons Commissioner Senaka Pallaththanna stated that Shiranthi Rajapaksa was transferred to the unit based on a recommendation from prison medical officers.
Meanwhile, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was admitted to a private hospital in Colombo yesterday morning, is continuing to receive treatment there.
In another development, the case against Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa over an alleged Rs. 100 million bribe linked to the Airbus deal involving the purchase of aircraft for SriLankan Airlines is scheduled to be taken up before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today.
When the case was last taken up on the 29th, the court ordered that the MP, who is a suspect in the case, be remanded until today.
