KwaMakhutha Mass Shooting Investigation: Mzamo Billy Urges Full Resource Deployment

KWAMAKHUTHA, KwaZulu-Natal — The KwaMakhutha mass shooting investigation has prompted urgent calls for a comprehensive and well-resourced law enforcement response after a deadly ambush claimed 11 lives south of Durban. Mzamo Billy, a member of the DA NCOP Select Committee on Security and Justice, is pressing Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia to deploy all available national resources to solve the tragedy and restore peace to the affected community.

The horrific incident, described by authorities as a targeted ambush, occurred late last night in the KwaMakhutha area. Among the 11 individuals brutally killed in the attack was a pregnant woman. Three other victims sustained injuries during the massacre and are currently recovering. The sheer scale and brutality of the attack have left the local community deeply shocked and traumatized.

KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed they are actively seeking a person of interest in connection with the massacre. Authorities have also indicated that a few of the deceased victims were previously on the crime intelligence radar due to suspected involvement in illegal activities, though specific details regarding these illicit links have not been divulged to the public.

Addressing the crisis, Billy emphasized that while the initial response by local police was acknowledged, the unprecedented scale of the attack requires an extraordinary intervention. He urged Acting Minister Cachalia to ensure that investigators are equipped with every form of specialist support necessary. Specifically, Billy highlighted the critical need for senior investigators, dedicated detectives, enhanced crime intelligence, and robust forensics and ballistics capacity to effectively trace the perpetrators.

Despite public speculation suggesting the attack might be linked to rival gang violence or organized crime, Billy cautioned against jumping to conclusions. He stressed that the South African Police Service (SAPS) must be allowed to follow the evidence to determine the true motive—whether it stems from organized crime, a personal dispute, or another cause—without premature assumptions undermining the integrity of the investigation.

Acknowledging that KwaZulu-Natal has been grappling with heightened violence, including recent deadly clashes between police and suspects, Billy framed the massacre as a “national tragedy” rather than just a provincial or local issue. He insisted that national policing leadership must coordinate the response to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended, processed through the criminal justice system, and locked away for the longest possible time.

Concluding his remarks, Billy also touched upon the broader, systemic issue of illegal firearm availability in the country, noting that addressing the influx of guns remains a critical factor in preventing future tragedies and safeguarding South African communities.
