OMUTHIYA – The community of Omuthiya in Oshikoto region raised a total of N$346 690 through the Oshinamumwe Combined School fundraising gala dinner to help sustain the school’s academic excellence.
It will also help improve education in the region through the construction of a school hall.
The amount, raised through cash contributions and pledges, was accompanied by 70 bags of cement and one goat donated towards the project.
Speaking during the gala dinner held at the Omuthiya Fire Station on Friday, Oshikoto governor Sacky Kathindi said that the proposed hall would provide a much-needed multipurpose facility for learners, teachers and the wider community.
He said that the hall would provide space for assemblies, educational and cultural activities, learner development and the celebration of achievements.
“The money raised from this fundraising gala dinner will be invested in maintaining the academic excellence of the school as well as that of the region by building a school hall,” Kathindi said.
The governor said that quality education required more than teachers and classrooms, stressing that schools should provide environments where learners could learn, participate, develop their talents and feel a sense of dignity and belonging.
Kathindi further called on businesses, parents, development partners, alumni and community members to support the project, saying development could not be achieved by government alone.
He commended the school board, principal, teachers, parents and community for mobilising resources towards the construction of the hall.
Chief Education Officer Samuel Sakaria said that the fundraising initiative was necessary because some learners walk long distances to attend schools that lack adequate chairs and classrooms, let alone
multipurpose halls.
Sakaria said that the gala dinner was aimed at raising funds to complete the hall and, in the process, contribute to building the future of learners.
“Every brick laid is a statement that every child deserves a safe and conducive place to learn, to grow and to dream,” he said.
He said that improving school infrastructure is part of creating conditions that support the delivery of quality education.
He urged all stakeholders to continue supporting the initiative until the project is completed, describing the hall as a potential symbol of partnership, hope and opportunity for future generations.
