Opposition aspirants power-drunk, lack development agenda – PRP presidential hopeful

A People’s Redemption Party (PRP) presidential aspirant, Yakubu Kingsley, has accused opposition candidates eyeing the 2027 presidency of being intoxicated by the pursuit of power, with no developmental agenda or programme to show for it.

In a statement in Abuja, Kingsley said it “increasingly appears” that some of the gladiators are more focused on acquiring political power and removing the incumbent than on telling Nigerians what they would do differently in office.

“Removing an incumbent should not, by itself, constitute a national development agenda,” he said, insisting that Nigerians must be given a reason to vote for a new approach, not merely against a sitting president.

He dismissed the opposition’s posture as a contest of personal attacks and political exchanges, and challenged the candidates to disclose their implementation plans, the resources required and the results Nigerians should expect.

“Candidates should tell Nigerians not only what they oppose, but what they intend to build and the pathway through which they intend to deliver it,” he said.

Promises versus a governing plan

Kingsley said personal experience and political history cannot substitute for a national development programme. “This is the difference between having promises and having a governing plan,” he said.

He said the YMK Nigeria Project has already developed an alternative national policy setting out objectives, implementation structures, resource requirements, timelines, the roles of federal, state and local governments, and measurable indicators of progress.

Setting himself apart from the opposition pack, Kingsley commended the Federal Government’s road projects, especially the Coastal Highway. Speaking as a highway engineer, he said his assessment was technical rather than political. “Such projects of economic value, that have been properly conceived and under execution, deserve recognition,” he said.

He added that this did not mean all was well, citing hardship, rising living costs, unemployment and insecurity.

Kingsley, who is challenging the declaration of Donald Duke as winner of the PRP’s May 25 presidential primary, said he awaits the Federal High Court’s November 2, 2026 judgment on his participation in the 2027 race.

“The 2027 election should not be reduced to a contest over who should leave office or who should occupy the office,” he said. “It should be a serious national conversation about what Nigeria should become.”
