Preliminary report on Chivayo helicopter crash expected in 30 days
The cause of the helicopter crash that killed businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife and three others in Marondera on 30 September has not yet been established, with investigators now carrying out detailed forensic examinations of the recovered wreckage.
Addressing the post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Zhemu Soda said preliminary on-site investigations had been completed, but authorities were yet to determine what caused the Bell 430 helicopter to come down at Kudenga Farm.
The helicopter, registered in Zimbabwe as Z-PED and operated by Sky Helicopters Private Limited, crashed in misty conditions at Kudenga Farm in Mashonaland East while flying from Gandami in Chikomba District to Marondera.
Chivayo, his wife Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, security officer Senelisiwe Magagula, and pilots Captain Kelvin Soda and Captain Courage Mutavira were all killed in the crash.
Soda said the wreckage has been moved to the Government hangar at Charles Prince Airport to allow for detailed forensic examination, which will include international experts.
A preliminary report is expected within 30 days of the accident, in line with international investigation standards, and will cover examination of the wreckage, meteorological information, maintenance records, and operator and crew records.
