AshantiGold secure 1-0 victory over Samartex

FC AshantiGold 04 secured a narrow 1-0 victory over FC Samartex 1996 in their Ghana Premier League Matchday Six encounter at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi on Sunday, with Raphael Ankamah’s 15th-minute penalty proving decisive.

The Miners took an early lead through Ankamah, who confidently converted from the penalty spot to put the home side ahead and give their supporters something to celebrate.

Despite conceding early, Samartex enjoyed the majority of possession, particularly in the second half, as they sought to find a way back into the contest.

However, the Timber Giants struggled to translate their dominance on the ball into clear opportunities, with AshantiGold’s defence standing firm throughout the encounter.

The hosts demonstrated defensive discipline and resilience to frustrate their opponents, protecting their slender advantage against a Samartex side determined to preserve their unbeaten start to the campaign.

Samartex had arrived in Obuasi after recording three wins and two draws from their opening five matches, making them one of the Ghana Premier League’s early unbeaten sides.

Their positive start had raised expectations ahead of the trip, but they were unable to find a response to Ankamah’s first-half spot-kick.

The result represents an important response for AshantiGold following their 3-2 defeat to Heart of Lions in the previous round.

The victory also strengthens the Miners’ impressive home record, extending their unbeaten run in league matches at the Len Clay Stadium to 18 games, comprising 15 wins and three draws since their Division One League days.

AshantiGold will take confidence from their ability to withstand sustained pressure, while Samartex must reflect on their inability to turn possession into goals.

Ultimately, Ankamah’s early penalty separated the two sides, as the Miners claimed maximum points and continued their strong home form in the Ghana Premier League.
