Healthcare Workers Declare 7-Day Warning Strike In Katsina, Threaten Indefinite Action

Healthcare services across Katsina State may face disruption as the Assembly of Healthcare Professionals (AHAPN) has declared a seven-day warning strike following the expiration of its 21-day ultimatum to the state government without what it described as any meaningful response.

The warning strike, involving members of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), and the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), is scheduled to begin at 12:00 midnight on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the State Chairman of AHAPN, Comrade Ibrahim Balange, said the strike was necessary because the state government had allegedly failed to show serious commitment to addressing the workers’ long-standing welfare and professional demands.

Balange warned that the assembly would embark on an indefinite strike if the government failed to take the necessary steps before the end of the seven-day warning action.

He said the decision followed years of dialogue and repeated engagements with the government, which, according to him, had continued to acknowledge the legitimacy of the workers’ demands without taking concrete steps towards implementation.

The union chairman appealed to residents of the state to bear with healthcare workers over the inconvenience that may result from the strike, saying all peaceful avenues for resolving the dispute had been exhausted.

“We call on the general public to understand our situation and hold the government responsible for any inconveniences this action may cause. We have exhausted all amicable options without success,” the statement said.

The planned strike followed a 21-day ultimatum issued by AHAPN on August 11, 2026, during a press briefing at the MHWUN State Secretariat in Katsina.

Among the union’s demands is the immediate implementation of 100 percent CONHESS as applicable in federal health institutions, implementation of the skipping of CONHESS 10, and an upward review of the 10 percent hazard allowance to bring it in line with federal standards.

The workers are also demanding improved call duty, shift duty, clinical, non-clinical, rural and specialist allowances, as well as an increase in the uniform allowance for nurses to ₦80,000.

AHAPN said the demands are aimed at improving the welfare of healthcare professionals, boosting staff morale and strengthening healthcare service delivery across Katsina State.

If the warning strike proceeds, healthcare services in public health facilities across the state are expected to be affected, although medical doctors, who are not members of the assembly, are excluded from the action.
