16 corps members abducted in Kogi
State while travelling to Abuja after completing their Orientation Course in Bayelsa State. The corps members were abducted on 26 August 2026 while travelling from the Bayelsa State orientation camp to Abuja following their relocation. The NYSC Management, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its director, Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, expressed appreciation to the security agencies involved in the search and rescue operation. Embu said the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Kogi State vigilante groups and other stakeholders played crucial roles in securing the freedom of the corps members. She said, “The management of the National Youth Service Corps expresses profound appreciation to the security agencies and groups involved in the successful rescue of the sixteen Corps Members abducted in Kogi State on 26 August 2026.” According to her, the professionalism, courage, commitment and coordination displayed during the rescue operation deserved commendation. She also acknowledged the support of President Bola Tinubu, describing his commitment to the safety and welfare of corps members nationwide as unwavering. “The Scheme acknowledges the unwavering support and commitment of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the safety and welfare of Corps Members nationwide,” Embu said. She added that the concern expressed by the President helped galvanise the security agencies into action towards securing the safe release of the abducted corps members. “The security agencies were indeed animated by His Excellency’s concern and commitment to urgently and successfully rescuing the Corps Members,” she stated. The NYSC also commended the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Minister of Youth Development for their roles in the recovery efforts, expressing appreciation to the families of the affected corps members for their patience and cooperation throughout the period of the abduction. The NYSC director said the management was relieved that all 16 corps members had been safely recovered and were in high spirits, with plans to resume at their respective places of primary assignment.
