Man United vs Brighton is going to be a goal-fest and three analysis points prove it

Manchester United’s Carabao Cup clash against Brighton has the makings of a high-scoring and chaotic match.

Next up for Manchester United is the start of the 2026/27 Carabao Cup campaign, and the Red Devils were drawn against Brighton for the third round, which will be played at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

Ahead of the match, Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has warned United about his side’s “ruthless” run of form this season.

Brighton head into the match fresh from a 5-0 thumping of Coventry City in the Premier League. Wednesday evening sees two of the most creative teams in the country go head-to-head.

There are three reasons why I’m anticipating a match full of goals on Wednesday, and all it takes to explain is a glance at the Premier League statistics from the start of the 2026/27 season.

Let’s start with goals: Brighton top the Premier League charts with 13 goals scored in just four games, an average of 3.25. If you include their European games, they have scored 17 goals in six matches.

United cannot compete with that figure, but seven goals in four matches is not a bad output from Michael Carrick’s side, and that is despite United being the unluckiest side in the division.

Secondly, Brighton’s goals are no fluke. They come from brilliant creativity. If you look at expected goals (xG) this season, they are once again top of the pile.

Brighton have generated an xG of 10.17 in four matches, more than every other Premier League team. The side that sits second? United. With an xG of 8.29.

Wednesday’s match is between the two most chance-creating teams in England’s top flight.

The final point of analysis is the shots taken by both teams. Once again, Brighton are at the top of the Premier League charts for shots taken. They have managed 62 in their opening four matches, a staggering average of 15.5 per match.

Again, United are second, with 54 shots in their opening four matches. Both United and Brighton are well clear of every other team, with Brentford in third place with 45 shots this season.
