Gunmen Walked Into A House Party In South Africa And Killed 11 People, Including A Pregnant Woman, And Police Still Don't Know Why

Here's what actually happened

The shooting happened late Tuesday night in KwaMakhutha township, about 19 miles south of Durban on South Africa's east coast. People had gathered at the house for a party when three gunmen entered and started shooting.

Police haven't named a suspect and haven't made any arrests. They also haven't confirmed a motive, though they said in a statement that some of the people at the house were already known to police through separate criminal investigations. Police wouldn't say more about those investigations, citing the risk of compromising them.

A police statement floating "a feud between rival groupings" as a possible motive tells you this wasn't a random act of chaos. Someone had a reason to walk into that house, and eleven people paid for it with their lives before investigators had a single suspect in custody.

The area has a reputation, and residents know it

Thami Ntuli, premier of KwaZulu-Natal province, showed up at the scene and called the killings "really disturbing." He also said something that matters more than the adjective. He described the neighborhood as one with known problems around drug dealing and illegal firearms, where houses sit just a few meters apart with no fences or walls separating them.

That detail explains a lot about how fast three gunmen could get in, do this, and disappear.

Is this an isolated incident?

South Africa has been through this before, and recently. In June, multiple shooters killed 12 people in a poor Johannesburg neighborhood in an attack police linked to criminal gangs. Two separate mass shootings two weeks apart in December killed 21 people combined.

The country's homicide numbers back up the pattern. Police recorded 5,427 homicides in the most recent three month reporting period alone, one of the highest rates anywhere in the world.

What happens next?

Police are searching for the three gunmen. No one has been arrested. Investigators say the possibility of a targeted attack tied to an existing feud remains on the table, but they haven't ruled anything out publicly, and they haven't said when they expect to have answers for the families waiting on them.
