Tensions boiled over between England team-mates Declan Rice and Morgan Rogers during Arsenal’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium, with the pair involved in a furious confrontation late in the match.
Rogers reacted angrily after Rice brought him down during a Chelsea attack, appearing to believe the Arsenal midfielder had deliberately stopped him from breaking into the penalty area.
Chelsea were searching for a late equaliser when Cole Palmer attempted to advance the attack.
Rogers was preparing to make a run towards the Arsenal box when Rice tripped him just outside the area.
The challenge ended the immediate threat, with Palmer subsequently sending his effort wide.
Rogers quickly got back to his feet and confronted Rice, pushing his England colleague before repeatedly wagging his finger at him.
The Chelsea midfielder appeared to tell Rice, “Don’t do that”, several times.
His reaction suggested Rogers felt the challenge was cynical and intended to prevent him from reaching the penalty area.
Referee Chris Kavanagh appeared not to penalise Rice for the initial trip.
Instead, he produced a yellow card for Rogers after the Chelsea player’s angry reaction.
The decision added to Rogers’ frustration, although the midfielder remained on the pitch for only a short time afterwards.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso subsequently replaced Rogers, seemingly removing the risk of the situation escalating further and potentially resulting in a red card.
Despite the confrontation during the match, Rice appeared keen to put the incident behind him.
After the final whistle, the Arsenal midfielder approached Rogers and shook hands with his England team-mate.
The pair could soon be reunited on international duty, with England preparing for their Nations League fixtures against Spain and Czechia later this month.
Rogers had been one of the game’s standout figures early on after putting Chelsea ahead inside just two minutes.
The England international produced a superb instinctive finish before celebrating in front of the Arsenal supporters.
His celebration appeared to draw inspiration from Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, as Rogers placed his hand on the corner flag.
Chelsea’s promising start, however, failed to translate into victory.
Arsenal gradually took control and found their equaliser in the 25th minute when Kai Havertz found the net.
The hosts then completed the turnaround five minutes after half-time, with Martin Odegaard scoring in the 50th minute to put Arsenal ahead.
Chelsea were unable to find another goal despite creating opportunities as they attempted to rescue a point.
The result preserved Arsenal’s flawless beginning to the Premier League campaign.
The champions have now collected nine points from their opening three matches, having previously defeated Coventry City and Aston Villa.
Manchester City have also won all three of their opening games, meaning Arsenal and City are the only teams with maximum points at this stage of the season.
The defeat was the first suffered by Alonso since he took charge at Chelsea, bringing his unbeaten start to an end.
The Chelsea boss admitted that the result was painful but praised the intensity displayed by both sides.
Alonso described the match as a “very intense game” and said both teams had fought hard throughout the contest.
He explained that Chelsea made an excellent start by scoring early but found it difficult to maintain control once Arsenal increased the pressure.
According to Alonso, the game became more evenly balanced after Arsenal’s equaliser, with Chelsea creating chances of their own.
He ultimately felt that small moments decided the contest and expressed disappointment that Chelsea left north London without anything to show for their efforts.
