Era Of Long Wait For Pension Benefits Over—PenCom
Concerned by the previous experiences of endless wait for receiving of pension entitlements, the Director General of the apex pension regulatory authority, National Pension Commission (PenCom) Omolola Oloworaran has disclosed that no pensioners should retire into productive years rather than into poverty.
Addressing media practitioners in Lagos during PenCom Media Conference, the DG also announced that the era of waiting for pension benefits has come to an end as retirees now their benefits almost at point of exit.
Delivering her keynote at the 2026 PenCom Media Conference, she maintained that for thousands of Nigerian retirees, the long wait for pension benefits may finally be becoming a thing of the past.
The PenCom helmswoman announcing the sweeping changes in Nigeria’s pension administration, pointed out that Renewed Hope Agenda has already been yielding positive developments in the pension industry with faster payment of retirement benefits, increased pensions for retirees and the settlement of long-standing federal government pension liabilities.
According to her, the reforms had moved beyond policy promises to measurable results.
Speaking on the theme, “From Reform to Reality: Renewed Hope, Pension Security for Nigeria,” Oloworaran re-emphasised that the era in which retirees were forced to wait months or years before receiving benefits was gradually coming to an end.
“Under our zero waiting time policy, federal retirees now begin to receive their pensions as they retire, instead of waiting for a monthly salary cycle,” she said.
The policy, according to her, represents a major shift in Nigeria’s pension administration, particularly for workers who have spent decades in public service.
241,000 retirees benefit from pension increase
One of the major developments highlighted by the PenCom boss was the implementation of Pension Boost 1.0, which increased monthly pensions for more than 241,000 retirees.
According to Oloworaran, total monthly pension payments to the affected retirees increased from N12.15 billion to N14.83 billion.
While the figures represent a major financial intervention, the impact is more personal for pensioners who depend on their monthly payments to meet basic needs such as food, medication and accommodation.
“For a retired teacher or a retired nurse, that is not a statistic. It is food on the table,” she said.
PenCom also reported that retirement benefits which previously took as long as 21 months to approve can now be approved within 24 hours for eligible federal government workers.
For private-sector retirees, the commission said approval timelines had similarly been reduced from what could previously take weeks to a maximum of about 48 hours under the new process.
Nearly N1 trillion intervention reaches beneficiaries
Another major component of the reform is the Federal Government’s intervention to settle inherited pension liabilities.
Oloworaran said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a N758 billion Federal Government intervention fund, through which payments had reached 957,045 beneficiaries.
The beneficiaries, she said, represent nearly one million Nigerians affected by pension obligations inherited from previous administrations.
The development is particularly significant for retirees whose entitlements had remained unpaid for years.
“These obligations have passed from one administration to the next. This administration chose to settle it,” Oloworaran said.
