Pokémon TCG Live Expanded update: What is Expanded and why should you care?
Live finally gets a small but notable update to Expanded.
Pokémon Trading Card Game Live – or just “Live” for the sake of brevity – has just revealed a change that will allow players to make use of older cards again.
“Are you prepared to send and receive a new type of challenge request? We’re excited to share that, starting November 3, 2026, you’ll be able to challenge friends to Expanded format matches in Pokémon TCG Live!” reads a brief announcement from the official account for the game.
Now, this requires some explanation, both for those unfamiliar with the game, and those who may have never experienced Expanded.
In the real life Pokémon Trading Card Game, the format that receives the most support and forms the core of the competitive scene is called Standard. This format only uses the newest cards, and it experiences something called rotation every year. Rotation removes the oldest cards from the legal card pool, again leaving only the most recent releases for players to use.
Both the players, and Pokémon, benefit from rotation. Players get older, problematic cards are removed from the pool and the entire game gets refreshed, giving it an entirely new meta and updated feel. When assembling decks with real cards, acquiring new cards is also usually much easier (and cheaper) than tracking down those which are older.
Pokémon itself benefits from this system by selling new cards to players, who otherwise focus on actually playing instead of collecting.
Expanded, on the other hand, allows for the use of the older cards. It doesn’t allow all cards to be used, however, with the oldest expansion being 2011’s Black & White. Everything released after that, bearing a few banned cards, is legal.
So this is how the real card game works. In Live, the official online simulator of the TCG, things work a bit differently in terms of exact card pools, but it’s mostly the same. The big difference is that, since Live launched in 2023, Expanded has been ignored and left with few updates making playing of this format very difficult.
Fans of Expanded have been asking for this to be mended for years now, which is what makes today’s news so notable.
It’s a small step, but still one to be celebrated, especially for those who care about the older cards and the preservation of the game.
The next big change, we hope, is the addition of more old cards. As mentioned the card pool in Live is slightly different to real life, due to many expansions of old cards simply not existing in Live. We’re unsure if that will ever change, especially as Live has many technical issues, but we can hope.
