Tanzania calls for stronger government-parliament ties

ARUSHA: PRIME Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has called on governments and parliaments to strengthen cooperation, accountability and good governance to promote peace, development and people’s well-being.

Dr Nchemba made the remarks on Monday evening when addressing the ongoing 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Arusha, noting that parliaments have a critical role in ensuring public institutions respond effectively to citizens’ needs.

He said parliament was uniquely positioned to advance good governance and inclusive development through legislation, oversight of government programmes, approval of public expenditure and ensuring that the government remains accountable to citizens.

“These principles guide both our Parliament and our nation. We continue to promote peace, protect human rights and strengthen democracy,” he said.

Dr Nchemba said the government had continued strengthening institutions responsible for accountability and oversight, citing the Office of the Controller and Auditor General (CAG), which has been allocated more than 132bn/- in the 2026/27 financial year.

He said the allocation was part of efforts to strengthen oversight and ensure prudent management of public resources. The Premier said President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan believed in constitutional governance and separation of powers, stressing that strong and independent institutions were essential for building prosperous, stable and inclusive societies.

He said good governance was not merely about institutions, but also about protecting human dignity, ensuring every citizen was heard, empowering communities and creating opportunities for every generation to prosper.

Dr Nchemba said challenges facing societies increasingly transcended national borders, making cooperation, dialogue and parliamentary diplomacy essential.

He cited climate change, public health emergencies, economic crises, political divisions and technological disruption among challenges that could not be effectively addressed by individual countries acting alone. “Today, no nation can prosper in isolation,” Dr Nchemba said, stressing the importance of cooperation and partnership in addressing shared global challenges.

He said the Covid-19 pandemic, conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East had demonstrated the interconnected nature of global challenges and the need for countries to work together to find lasting solutions.

Dr Nchemba said parliamentary diplomacy provided an important platform for countries to exchange views, build consensus and strengthen cooperation despite differences in political systems and national.

He also highlighted progress in the energy, railway, education and health sectors as part of the government’s efforts under President Samia’s leadership to improve the lives of Tanzanians.

Dr Nchemba commended IPU President Dr Tulia Ackson for her leadership of the global parliamentary body, saying she had brought honour to Tanzania and demonstrated the importance of equal opportunities in international leadership.

He said the 153rd IPU Assembly provided an opportunity for parliamentarians from different parts of the world to deliberate on common challenges and explore practical ways of promoting peace, democracy, good governance and inclusive development.

Dr Nchemba called for continued cooperation among governments and parliaments, saying dialogue and partnership remained essential in addressing challenges affecting people across the world.
