Man steals woman’s phone after sleepover, fined US$160

A 22-year-old man from Inyathi in Bubi District has been fined US$160 after stealing a cellphone from a woman following a sleepover at Matovovo Bar at Mahamba Business Centre.

Zibusiso Moyo appeared before Resident Magistrate Challenge Mahembe facing a theft charge as defined in terms of Section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23].

The court heard that on April 24, 2026, at about 2am, Moyo was invited by the complainant, Thando Tshuma (27), for a sleepover at Matovovo Bar.

It was not established in court whether the pair were in a romantic relationship.

Tshuma later woke up at around 8am and discovered that Moyo was no longer in bed.

She searched for her Villalon Android cellphone, which had been left on the bed, but could not find it.

Later that day, at about 11:45pm, Tshuma allegedly spotted Moyo at Best Night Club and confronted him about the missing cellphone.

Moyo admitted having taken the cellphone but told Tshuma that he had handed it to an unidentified person at the nightclub.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to Moyo’s arrest.
