The Northern Christian Religious Assembly (NOCRELA) has disclosed that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) remains the overall head of every Christian affiliation, and groups should see it as the umbrella body over all Christians in the country.
Speaking at the inauguration/investiture of the Niger State Chapter yesterday in Minna, the National President of NOCRELA, Archbishop John Praise Daniel, said it is good for various groups to spring up but that they should be able to add their voices to amplify what CAN is doing and not to create division.
Represented by the National Public Secretary, Rev. Bulus Bature Yayaha, the Archbishop said the Assembly’s functions are to stand firm for the faith and with CAN.
According to him, “NOCRELA is not another organisation that is in rivalry with CAN; rather, it is a movement that complements the workings of CAN as our umbrella Body.
He then added that, of the two major religions, Christians only have CAN, whereas the other major religion has different recognised groups.
In a short exhortation, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN Niger State Chapter, Most. Rev. Bulus Yohanna said this is why genuine Christians need voices that can speak for Christians in the state.
Bishop Yohanna, who was represented by his Deputy, Rev. Joshua Marcus, however, said it is good to have diverse groups, but asked “can we all agree to speak with one voice?”
According to him, “this is the time we need people, both individuals and groups of persons, to speak for us; and for us to unite and speak with one voice.”
He then said, with the calibre of persons the Body has, there is need for Christians to come out en-mass, adding that “It is only in Christianity that leaders are left to stand alone and not given support on certain positions”.
Earlier, in his remarks, Chairman of the Inauguration committee, EVANG. Charles Amatu disclosed that the inauguration was long overdue, adding that “other northern states have had their executives in place and Niger is just having its executives.
Chairman of the State Chapter, Rev. Samuel Shaba, while inaugurating the Women wing led by Hon. Deborah Salawu, charged them to work in partnership with the state executive.
