Matuludi Sends Downs Top Again

Mamelodi Sundowns reclaimed the top spot in the Betway Premiership after a convincing 4-1 victory over Durban City on Saturday evening. Defender Thabang Matuludi scored twice as Masandawana eased past the visitors and moved back above Orlando Pirates on the log.

The Brazilians went into the match second in the standings and knew a win would put them back in front. They took the lead just before half-time when Matuludi rose highest to head home a precise corner from Marcelo Allende. The right-back, who joined the club from Polokwane City earlier in the season, then added a second goal shortly after the hour mark to give his side a comfortable cushion.

Sundowns continued to press and were rewarded again in the 79th minute when substitute Iqraam Rayners found the net. Durban City pulled one back five minutes later through Jean Lwamba, but the home side restored their three-goal lead deep into stoppage time when Antonio Van Wyk finished off the scoring. The final whistle confirmed a 4-1 result and three valuable points for Miguel Cardoso’s side.

Matuludi’s brace was the standout moment of the night. The Bafana Bafana international has settled quickly at Chloorkop and showed he can contribute at both ends of the pitch. His two goals helped Sundowns control the game and made sure they stayed clear of any late pressure from Durban City.

The victory means Sundowns are once again sitting at the summit of the Betway Premiership. They remain unbeaten in the league and have now collected maximum points from their latest outing. Durban City, still searching for consistency under coach Eric Tinkler, will be disappointed after showing moments of promise but ultimately being outclassed.

With the league race tightening, this result gives Sundowns a timely boost. Matuludi’s performance will give the coaching staff another option going forward, while the attacking contributions from Rayners and Van Wyk show the depth available in the squad. The Brazilians will look to build on this win as they aim to stay at the top for the long term.
