As Uganda mourns His Majesty Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, we must tell the full story to the young generation — a story that connects 1967, 1993, and 1995.
The Abolition — 1967
On 8th September 1967, the government of former President Apollo Milton Obote promulgated the Republican Constitution which abolished all Kingdoms and Chiefdoms in Uganda. The Kingdoms of Buganda, Bunyoro-Kitara, Tooro, Ankole and the Chiefdom of Busoga ceased to exist legally. Kings became common citizens overnight. Royal properties were confiscated by the state, palaces were turned into government offices and barracks, and the sacred royal drums fell silent. For 26 years, Uganda lived without its cultural soul. Culture survived only in the hearts of elders and in quiet whispers.
The Restoration — 1993
In 1993, H.E. Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the National Resistance Movement made a historic, bold and reconciliatory decision to restore Traditional and Cultural Institutions, but with a strictly cultural mandate. This was not a political decision — it was a cultural healing of the nation. It was a restoration of dignity, identity, unity and pride. It allowed Ugandans to once again be Baganda, Batooro, Banyoro, Basoga, with a King to look up to.
The Return of a Father — Omukama Patrick David Mathew Kaboyo Olimi
For Tooro Kingdom, restoration meant the return from exile of a great son — His Majesty Omukama Patrick David Mathew Kaboyo Olimi. Born in 1945, Omukama Olimi Kaboyo was the son of the great Omukama Rukidi III. He had lived in exile in Nairobi, Kenya during the years of abolition.
When kingdoms were restored, he returned home triumphantly to reclaim the throne of his forefathers. He was enthroned in 1965 earlier and then re-enthroned after restoration. He was a strong, developmental and charismatic King. He immediately set out to rebuild a Kingdom that had been in ruins for nearly three decades — mobilizing his people, rebuilding Karuzika Palace, and restoring the pride of Tooro. The people loved him. But fate was cruel. His reign was tragically cut short when he passed away suddenly on 26th August 1995 in Kampala, leaving behind a young widow, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, and three little children.
The Miracle of a Son — Omukama Oyo Nyimba
At that moment of deep grief and uncertainty, when Tooro had lost its King, the elders of Tooro made a decision that shocked the world. On 12th September 1995, they enthroned his only son, Prince Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru, a 3-and-a-half-year-old toddler, as Rukirabasaija Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The image of that small boy, almost swallowed by the royal chair, crown and robes, crying on the throne, became an unforgettable image for Uganda and the world. He became the youngest monarch in the world.
But what followed was even more inspiring. We watched him grow before our very eyes. We admired how he was raised like any other child — going to pre-school, primary, secondary, disciplined by his mother and guardians, taught to fear God and respect people — yet carrying the enormous weight of his late father Olimi Kaboyo’s Kingdom on his small shoulders with unbelievable grace.
For 31 years, he reigned. For the young generation, he became a source of great inspiration and hope. He proved that leadership is not about age, but about grace, wisdom, character and service.
The Guardian — H.E. President Museveni
This is where the role of H.E. the President becomes inseparable from Tooro’s history. He is the man who restored the Kingdom that allowed Omukama Olimi Kaboyo to return. He is the man who stood as guardian and father figure to the infant King Oyo after his father’s death. He guided his education, supported his leadership, and walked with Tooro Kingdom through all these years.
Today, even in death, that love is evident. From being his guardian, to granting an official burial to the late King, to personally receiving his mortal remains at Entebbe International Airport — this is not just official responsibility. It is true love, deep compassion and genuine fatherhood. A father receiving his son for the last time.
So when we mourn Omukama Oyo, we also remember his father Omukama Olimi Kaboyo who rebuilt Tooro from ashes, and we thank Mzee Museveni who made that rebuilding possible.
Without restoration, there would be no return. Without return, there would be no Prince Oyo. Without Prince Oyo, there would be no generation King.
History will forever link three names: Olimi Kaboyo — The Rebuilder, Museveni — The Restorer and Guardian, and Oyo Nyimba — The Generation King who put God first and whose humility lives a lasting impression.
