Maxamed Daahir Afrax (1952–2021): A Literary Conscience and Architect of Modern Somali Letters

By Anwar Maxamed Diiriye

An Essay in Honor of His Legacy and in Commemoration of the Fifth Anniversary of His Passing. “The best of people are those who are most beneficial to people.”
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, reported by al-Tabarani in Al-Muʿjam al-Awsat.

Five years after the passing of Maxamed Daahir Afrax, I return to his work with respect for the writer he was and the cultural responsibilities he assumed. His contributions reached across fiction, literary criticism, journalism, scholarship, and institution building. These activities were united by his sustained concern for the Somali language and for the people whose experiences it carries. I offer this essay in honor of that commitment and in commemoration of a life devoted to the intellectual and cultural life of his society.

I regard Afrax as a literary conscience because he treated writing as a means of examining how people live, what they value, and where they fail one another. His work invites us to consider the relationship between individual conduct and collective responsibility. His importance also lies in his efforts to sustain the institutions through which literature could be written, discussed, published, and passed to another generation. To remember him adequately, we must consider his writings alongside this less visible work of cultural organization.

Born in 1952 in Jarriiban, in the Mudug region, Afrax belonged to a generation shaped by profound historical change. The hopes accompanying Somali independence were followed by authoritarian rule, civil war, and the disintegration of public institutions. The adoption of the official Somali Latin orthography in 1972 opened new possibilities for education and publishing. His career developed within these changing circumstances, bringing the resources of oral tradition into conversation with prose fiction and modern literary scholarship.

Afrax’s literary formation was multilingual. In an interview published by the Somali Language Academy in 2019, he recalled beginning his writing in Arabic while still a student.

Afrax has contributed articles and short stories to Najmat Oktoobar, maintained a regular social commentary column, and recalled producing a bilingual periodical in Kismaayo in 1973 (Ashkir, 2019). These early activities help us understand the connection between journalism and his later literary concerns. From the beginning, he was interested in the society around him and in the writer’s ability to encourage reflection.

His Arabic historical novel Nidaaʾ al-Hurriyah, also recorded as Nida Al-Horiyah, belongs to this early development. Afrax identified it as his first published book. Its title may be rendered as The Call of Freedom. Although secondary accounts commonly date it to 1976, I have not established the original publication details with sufficient certainty to present that date without qualification. Its place in his career nevertheless reminds us that his contribution to literature extended beyond Somali-language writing.

His Arabic book Nadaraat fii al-Thaqaafah al-Soomaaliyah, approximately Perspectives on Somali Culture, likewise brought Somali cultural subjects to an Arabic-reading audience. In the same interview, he mentioned Diraasaat Naqdiyah wa Thaqaafiyah, approximately Critical and Cultural Studies, as awaiting publication. I include this title because it forms part of his intellectual record, while recognizing that its subsequent publication has not been confirmed. An author’s manuscripts deserve acknowledgment, but they must be distinguished from books known to have appeared.

Afrax’s place in Somali fiction rests especially on Maana-Faay, together with Guur-ku-sheeg and Galti-Macruuf. Secondary bibliographies commonly assign 1975 to Guur-ku-sheeg and 1980 to Galti-Macruuf. These dates require further examination of the original editions. Afrax himself described Galti-Macruuf as following Maana-Faay, which leaves questions about the sequence of composition, circulation, and publication. I therefore retain the commonly cited dates in the bibliography with appropriate qualifications.

Maana-Faay is commonly dated to its first book publication in 1981. A later edition is documented as having appeared through African Triangle in Stockholm in 1993, and a Learning Design edition is reported for London in 1997. These different dates should not be treated as interchangeable. More significantly, the novel’s literary standing does not require the claim that it was the first Somali novel. I consider it more accurate to recognize Afrax as a pioneering novelist whose work helped strengthen modern Somali prose and its readership.

Afrax explained the popularity of Maana-Faay and Galti-Macruuf in terms of their recognizable portrayal of society. Readers could see themselves in these stories and could recognize both the qualities sustaining their communities and the conduct threatening them (Ashkir, 2019). This explanation captures an important feature of his literary purpose. Fiction allowed social problems to become visible through people’s choices, relationships, ambitions, and disappointments. It gave readers an opportunity to examine their own circumstances through the experiences of others.

For me, this connection between literary imagination and social recognition is central to Afrax’s achievement. A novel can bring a public problem into the intimacy of an individual life. It can show how social expectations affect personal decisions and how private actions contribute to a wider moral climate. Afrax’s own account of his fiction encourages us to read it with attention to these relationships, while leaving room for the complexity of the people he represents.

Theatre also held an important place in his intellectual life. His securely documented contribution includes Fan-masraxeedka Soomaalida: Raad-raac Taariikheed iyo Faaqidaad Riwaayado Caan-baxay (1987), a substantial historical and critical study of Somali drama. The book examines the development of theatre and the difficulties it later faced. I value this work as a contribution to criticism and to cultural preservation. Performance can disappear from public memory when scripts, recordings, and accounts of production are lost; historical scholarship helps preserve a record through which later generations can understand it.

Four other titles—Durbaan Been Ah, Ambad, Haba Iman Lahaydaa, and Taloseeg—have been attributed to Afrax in the material considered for this essay. I retain them in the bibliography, but I have not independently verified their authorship or their publication and performance histories. I cannot therefore offer a reliable account of their themes or production dates. Acknowledging this uncertainty is part of the care that his literary record deserves.

His critical scholarship ranged widely across poetry, drama, oral expression, and literary terminology. “Ashakhsiyah Aturathiyah fi Shiʿr Hadraawi,” commonly cited to Al-Hikmah in 1987, points toward his interest in cultural inheritance in Hadraawi’s poetry. The full citation remains provisional until the original issue can be examined. “A Nation of Poets, or Art-loving People? Some Aspects of the Importance of Literature in Present-day Somali Society,” generally cited to Hal-Abuur in 1993/94, raises a broader question about the place of artistic expression in Somali life. Its title invites us to look beyond a familiar description of Somalis and consider the range of their literary and artistic practices.

“The Mirror of Culture: Somali Dissolution Seen Through Oral Expression,” published in Ahmed I. Samatar’s edited collection The Somali Challenge: From Catastrophe to Renewal? (1994), connects cultural expression with Somalia’s political and social deterioration. “Rural Imagery in Contemporary Somali Urban Poetry: A Debilitating Carryover in Transitional Verbal Art,” published in SOAS Literary Review in 1999, addresses the relationship between inherited imagery and a changing social environment. I see these studies as evidence of a scholar who valued tradition while remaining willing to examine its uses and limitations.

The public role of the literary artist receives explicit attention in “The ‘Abwaan’ as Beacon: The Centrality of the Message in Somali Literature with Especial Reference to the Play ‘Shabeelnaagoog’” (2004). The figure of the abwaan becomes a way of considering literature’s capacity to communicate ideas and influence public understanding.

A Note to the Reader: I offer this essay as a tribute to Maxamed Daahir Afrax and as a carefully considered account of his literary and cultural contributions. I ask you to read the accompanying bibliography with appropriate caution: some publication dates, early editions, and attributed works remain unverified, and a manuscript described as awaiting publication should not be assumed to have appeared. I have identified these uncertainties rather than present them as established facts. This essay is neither a definitive bibliography nor a close reading of every work listed. Any errors or omissions are my responsibility, and I welcome documented corrections that may help preserve an accurate record of Afrax’s legacy.
