PAM rejects allegations over Tangier election incidents and backs judicial investigation

Morocco’s Authenticity and Modernity Party, known as PAM, has rejected what it described as a campaign targeting the party following incidents reported at polling stations in Tangier during Wednesday’s parliamentary elections.

In a statement issued Wednesday, PAM’s collective leadership said it was following what it called a “fabricated” campaign surrounding the voting process in Tangier’s city electoral district, as well as videos and other claims circulated on social media.

The party said incidents at some polling stations in Tangier were part of what it described as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the electoral process and target PAM.

PAM alleged that political opponents were seeking to undermine the party because of what it described as its strong presence and growing support among voters.

The party also accused unnamed groups of using what it characterized as unethical tactics to damage the reputation of PAM candidates and members and influence the electoral process.

PAM did not identify those it accused or provide evidence in the statement to substantiate its allegations.

The party called for a judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents and determine who was responsible for what it described as false and misleading claims.

PAM said it had full confidence in state institutions and the judiciary and would abide by the laws governing the electoral process.

The party also said it reserved the right to pursue legal action against anyone it considers responsible for damaging its reputation or targeting its members and candidates.

The statement was issued in Rabat on Sept. 23, the day Morocco held parliamentary elections.
