CENTCOM Denies Iranian Claim That U.S. Navy Helicopter Crashed Into Red Sea

U.S. Central Command has strongly rejected reports from Iranian state media claiming that a U.S. Navy helicopter crashed into the Red Sea after declaring an emergency near the Saudi Arabian coast.

CENTCOM said Tuesday that the reported crash did not occur and confirmed that U.S. military personnel and aircraft operating across the Middle East were safe and accounted for.

The denial came after unusual flight-tracking activity involving an American MH-60R Seahawk triggered speculation about the aircraft’s whereabouts.

Emergency Declaration Sparks Initial Alarm

The incident involved a Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk operating under the call sign VVHR512.

Publicly available flight-tracking information showed the helicopter operating near Yanbu, a Saudi port city on the Red Sea, on Monday evening.

The aircraft reportedly declared an emergency at approximately 5:20 p.m. ET while flying in the area.

Tracking data indicated that the helicopter was flying at an altitude of roughly 475 feet when the emergency was declared. Its displayed altitude subsequently fell to zero before the aircraft disappeared from the publicly available tracking service.

The unusual sequence quickly prompted questions about whether the helicopter had experienced a serious problem.

Iranian Media Reports Possible Crash

The disappearance from the tracking platform was soon picked up by Iranian media outlets.

Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported Tuesday morning that the helicopter had “likely” crashed, citing the emergency declaration and the subsequent disappearance from flight-tracking data.

Other Iranian outlets also circulated reports suggesting that the aircraft may have gone down in the Red Sea.

The reports spread before U.S. officials publicly clarified what had happened.

U.S. Military Calls Reports False

CENTCOM moved to directly counter the claims, saying reports of a downed American Navy helicopter in the Red Sea were untrue.

“Reports of a downed U.S. Navy helicopter in the Red Sea are not true,” the command said.

CENTCOM further stated that all U.S. military aircraft and personnel across the Middle East were safe and accounted for.

The command also specifically accused Iranian state media of promoting false information about the incident.

What Happened to the Helicopter Remains Unclear

Although CENTCOM has confirmed that there was no crash, the military has not publicly disclosed why the Seahawk declared an emergency.

Officials have also not explained why the aircraft subsequently disappeared from civilian flight-tracking systems.

That lack of detail leaves the circumstances surrounding the emergency unresolved, despite the military’s clear denial that the helicopter was lost.

The available tracking information initially created the impression of a potentially serious incident, particularly because the aircraft’s reported altitude dropped to zero before tracking information stopped.

MH-60R Is a Key U.S. Navy Helicopter

The MH-60R Seahawk is one of the U.S. Navy’s principal maritime helicopters and is designed for operations from aircraft carriers and other naval vessels.

Its capabilities include anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, electronic warfare, search and rescue, command and control and intelligence missions.

The aircraft therefore plays an important role in U.S. naval operations across areas where American forces maintain a significant military presence.

Incident Comes Amid Heightened Regional Tensions

The dispute over the helicopter comes against the backdrop of heightened military tensions across the Middle East.

U.S. forces continue to operate throughout the region amid the ongoing confrontation with Iran, while Iranian media closely monitors reported movements and incidents involving American military assets.

The emergency declaration therefore quickly attracted attention and became the subject of speculation before CENTCOM issued its clarification.

No Crash Confirmed, but Questions Remain

For now, the central claim from Iranian media has been firmly rejected by the U.S. military: there was no confirmed crash of an American Navy helicopter in the Red Sea.

However, CENTCOM has not provided a public explanation for the emergency declaration or the subsequent loss of the helicopter from civilian tracking systems.

Those unanswered questions are likely to keep attention on the incident even after the reported crash claims were dismissed.
