**ARUSHA: **THE Permanent Secretaries from East African Community (EAC) Partner States responsible for tourism and wildlife met on October 14, 2026, at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha to discuss measures to strengthen regional cooperation in promoting tourism, conserving natural resources and enhancing the bloc’s competitiveness in the global tourism market.
The meeting forms part of preparations for the 13th Meeting of the Sectoral Council on Tourism and Wildlife Management, scheduled for October 15, 2026. The council is expected to review the implementation of decisions and directives from previous meetings and establish policy and strategic priorities for the sustainable development of the sector.
Key issues discussed included harmonising tourism policies, regulatory frameworks, licensing requirements and service quality standards; strengthening joint efforts to promote the EAC as a single tourism destination; and enhancing wildlife and biodiversity conservation to support the sustainable use of tourism resources.
Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation responsible for East African Affairs, Charles Ngeleja Kadonya, emphasised the importance of regional cooperation in developing and managing tourism resources and attractions.

He said stronger cooperation would increase the sector’s contribution to economic growth, employment creation and citizens’ welfare.
“Our countries are endowed with unique tourism attractions, including internationally recognised national parks, wildlife reserves, mountains, beaches, lakes, marine ecosystems, cultural heritage and various historical attractions. These resources place us in a unique position to compete in the global tourism market,” Mr Kadonya said.
He noted that despite the region’s rich tourism resources, the EAC’s ability to fully benefit from the sector depended on effective cooperation, harmonised policies and standards, joint tourism promotion, improved transport infrastructure and sustainable investment.
