UP is centrist party based on pragmatism and balance

The leader of the United Party (UP), Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, has defended the formation of the party, insisting that its political philosophy and ideological orientation distinguish it from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He said the establishment of the United Party should not be viewed as an attempt to replicate or duplicate the existing political parties in Ghana, arguing that the UP is founded on a distinct centrist political philosophy anchored on pragmatism and balance.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, September 21, he explained that while the United Party draws inspiration from the historical United Party tradition, its current political identity is defined by its commitment to occupying the political centre.

He said the party’s philosophy is different from the ideological positions traditionally associated with the two dominant political parties in Ghana.

“Just to anchor the difference between what I am doing now and just reliving the tradition, the political philosophy of the United Party is that we are a centrist party based on pragmatism and balance.

“That is different from the NPP. The NPP is a conservative party. The NDC is a social democratic party. We are a centrist party. We are in the centre. We face, as Kwame Nkrumah said, we face neither left, the east or right, we face forward.”
