HBM Nigeria Plc has commissioned a high-capacity Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station in Cross River State as part of efforts to cut logistics costs and align with the Federal Government’s drive for cleaner, cheaper energy.
The new facility at the company’s Mfamosing Plant has the capacity to fuel up to 150 trucks daily in its first phase, with an installed capacity of 144,000 standard cubic metres of CNG per day.
The Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, said the investment was critical to reducing operating expenses in a period of rising energy costs.
“Energy and logistics remain significant cost drivers for the company and its value chain. By increasing the use of CNG, we are creating more efficient and more cost-effective operations,” Alade-Akinyemi said at the commissioning.
“This investment aligns with the Federal Government’s drive to adopt CNG as an alternative to cleaner energy.
“With this facility, we will utilize cleaner, environmentally friendly, more efficient and effective energy sources,” he added.
Designed for 24-hour operations, the station has two pumps and four dispensing points. The company said this will significantly reduce refuelling and truck waiting times, improve fleet availability, and enable faster delivery of goods to customers.
The Logistics Director, Osaze Aghatise, said Phase Two of the project, scheduled for October 2026, will increase capacity to serve approximately 250 trucks daily.
He noted that HBM Nigeria has been using CNG in its logistics operations for the last nine years, but the new station marks the shift from pilot to full-scale deployment.
Speaking at the event, the Cross River State Commissioner for Information, Pastor Ekpenyong Cobham, commended HBM Nigeria for the investment and reiterated the state government’s commitment to an investment-friendly environment.
The facility is part of HBM Nigeria’s broader logistics transformation agenda focused on operational excellence, improved asset utilisation and deployment of more sustainable transportation solutions.
