The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State have disagreed over the circumstances surrounding an airport reception for the NDC governorship candidate, Chinyeaka Ohaa, and an incident at the party’s state secretariat at the weekend.
The disagreement followed separate statements by the Enugu State Government and the NDC over the events, with both parties presenting different accounts of aspects of the incidents.
The NDC, at a press conference addressed by its state chairman, Emmanuel Chukwujekwu Nebo, faulted some of the explanations provided by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, on Sunday.
The party said its plan was to receive its governorship candidate at the airport and not to hold a statewide campaign flag-off, as stated by the government.
The NDC also said it had notified relevant law enforcement agencies of its plans and made payments to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
On the incident at its state secretariat, the party said it was still verifying the medical status of those reportedly injured.
Reacting, the Enugu State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Chief Uche Obute, called on the NDC to clarify its account of the incidents and apologise if any of its claims were found to be inaccurate.
Obute questioned the NDC’s statement that it was still verifying the medical status of those injured, while also referring to the party’s observance of a minute’s silence.
He also disputed the NDC’s account of the events and called for clarification of the circumstances surrounding the incidents.
The differing accounts highlight the need for the parties and relevant authorities to provide verifiable information about the airport reception and the incident at the NDC secretariat.
