Why Vipers SC should trust Ayala beyond the interim era

John ‘Ayala’ Luyinda has been announced as Vipers’ in-charge of the first team. However, can the club trust the gaffer beyond the interim era?

Without a doubt, Ayala has the tactical intelligence, championship experience and institutional knowledge to lead Vipers SC through this demanding period.

Vipers SC’s decision to entrust coach Luyinda with first-team responsibilities following Denis Lavagne’s departure should be more than a convenient internal promotion.

It should be an opportunity to place the club’s ambitions in the hands of a coach who understands its culture, knows its players and has contributed to its recent success.

With the Venoms chasing a third successive Uganda Premier League title and a ninth crown overall, Ayala offers a combination of continuity and tactical flexibility that could prove valuable in their pursuit of silverware.

Tactical flexibility could be key

One of Ayala’s greatest strengths is his ability to adapt his approach to different opponents but still manage to grind out positive results.

Rather than relying on a rigid system, he is regarded as a tactically flexible coach capable of adjusting formations, selections and playing patterns to exploit weaknesses.

Against defensively organised sides, Vipers need creativity and patience to break down tough opponents, something that they failed to do against Nouadhibou, UPPC, Maroons and Police. Against high-pressing opponents, they require composure, positional discipline and intelligent movement to exploit spaces.

Ayala’s footballing education under Mike Mutebi at KCCA FC further strengthens his credentials. Working alongside one of Ugandan football’s most influential tacticians exposed him to principles of positional organisation, intelligent possession and detailed tactical preparation.

His subsequent experiences across Ugandan football have helped him develop his own coaching identity, equipping him to address the varied challenges facing the defending champions.

Familiarity and a winning pedigree

Ayala’s strongest advantage may be his understanding of the Vipers establishment.

He previously worked under Abdallah Mubiru in 2016, returned alongside Nikola Kavazovic in 2024 and subsequently shared coaching responsibilities with Fred Muhumuza. He most recently served under Ivan Minnaert and Lavagne.

Having experienced different coaching regimes at Kitende, he understands the club’s expectations, dressing room dynamics and the qualities of the players at his disposal.

That familiarity could help him make immediate adjustments without the extended adaptation period an external appointment might require.

His contribution to Vipers’ championship success also offers a compelling endorsement. Alongside Muhumuza, he played an instrumental role in the 2025 domestic double, when the club won both the Uganda Premier League and Uganda Cup.

He subsequently served as Minnaert’s assistant during another league title-winning campaign. His coaching experience at Wakiso Giants, Police and KCCA, alongside his playing career at Kampala United, Maji, SC Villa and KCCA, further broadens his understanding of the domestic game.

Although success as an assistant does not guarantee success as head coach, Ayala has experienced the demands of winning trophies and understands the standards expected at Vipers.

The challenge ahead

Following continental disappointment and an underwhelming domestic start, Vipers need tactical clarity, greater consistency and renewed accountability.

Ayala inherits a talented squad whose individual quality must translate into collective performance. His immediate task is to improve the team’s organisation, sharpen its attacking efficiency and restore the competitive authority expected of the defending champions.

He must also establish his authority in the dressing room, ensuring that selection decisions are based on performance and that every player is held to the club’s standards.

“Having the responsibility to lead Vipers SC is an honour,” Ayala said.

“I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing.”

The challenge is now to turn that confidence into results.

Why Vipers should back him beyond the interim era

Ayala’s appointment is not without risk. The head coach carries a level of responsibility that differs significantly from that of an assistant, particularly at a club where winning trophies is an expectation rather than an aspiration.

However, his tactical adaptability, championship experience and institutional knowledge provide a credible foundation for success.

For chairman Dr Lawrence Mulindwa, the decision offers continuity without necessarily compromising the need for change.

Ayala already understands the club’s culture and personnel; the question is whether he can lead the team through adversity and sustain a title challenge.

Ultimately, his credentials don’t guarantee another championship, but they justify giving him the chance to prove himself.

Vipers have entrusted their ambitions to a coach who understands the demands of Kitende. Backing Ayala now means giving him the authority to turn that knowledge into performances worthy of the club’s championship ambitions.
