A comprehensive survey conducted jointly by the Health Promotion Bureau, the Family Health Bureau, the University of Colombo and UNICEF has revealed that around 80% of children in Sri Lanka do not brush their teeth twice a day. The survey also found that more than 64% of children under the age of five exceed the recommended daily limit for digital screen time.

The findings have highlighted several challenges that require serious social attention. Nearly 43% of children are reportedly directed to computers or mobile phones while eating, while around 32% do not get adequate sleep.

Amid the growing influence of modern digital culture, the active involvement of fathers in family life has also emerged as another serious concern. According to the survey, 47% of fathers do not work closely with their children. This has created conditions that can directly affect early childhood development in the country.

The World Health Organization recommends that young children have less than 30 minutes of screen time. Against this backdrop, the long-term impact of increasing dependence on technology on children’s mental and physical health remains a significant concern.

To address these challenges, the government has already taken steps to transform 19,000 preschools across the country into health promotion centres through the “Step Up” Early Childhood Development National Programme, which is being implemented in conjunction with the upcoming National Children’s Week.

If comprehensive measures are not taken to improve child health standards by educating parents and other stakeholders, there is a risk that the health and intellectual development of future generations could be seriously affected.
