Nigeria’s teenage tennis prospect, Seun Ogunsakin, has won his second International Tennis Federation (ITF) J200 title of the year after defeating France’s Matisse Martin in the boys’ singles final in Cairo, Egypt.
Ogunsakin secured a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Martin to claim the title, having previously triumphed at another J200 tournament in the Egyptian capital.
President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Victor Ochei, congratulated the youngster, describing his latest success as a significant achievement for Nigerian tennis.
Ochei said Ogunsakin’s back-to-back triumphs in Cairo demonstrated the growing ability of Nigerian players to compete at the highest level of international junior tennis.
“Seun has once again demonstrated that Nigerian talents can compete with the best in the world. Winning two J200 titles in one year is a remarkable achievement that speaks volumes about his discipline, determination and hunger for excellence. We are immensely proud of him,” Ochei said.
The NTF president linked Ogunsakin’s achievement to what he described as a resurgence in Nigerian tennis, following the promotion of the country’s men’s team to the Davis Cup World Group II and the women’s team to Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group II in 2026.
“From our Davis Cup success to the Billie Jean King Cup promotion and now Seun’s remarkable exploits, Nigerian tennis is steadily reclaiming its pride of place on the international stage,” he said.
Ochei added that the achievements reinforced the federation’s commitment to grassroots development and the identification and nurturing of young talents.
He also commended the National Sports Commission, led by chairman Shehu Dikko and director-general Bukola Olopade, as well as members of the NTF board, for supporting the development of tennis in the country.
The federation president reaffirmed the NTF’s commitment to securing more international opportunities for emerging players, stressing that its ambition was to build a sustainable pathway for Nigerian talents to excel globally.
“Our ambition is not merely to celebrate occasional victories but to establish Nigeria as a consistent force in international tennis. Seun’s success is another significant step towards realising that vision,” he added.
